Lake Superior Salmon continue on!

As The waters around Duluth slowly recover, I found myself, along with buddies Steve and Matt north of Duluth an hour in search of Salmon and the lake trout that were to be mixed in. Seas were calm and fishing turned out to be quite good!

In 6 hours of trolling we hooked up with 14 fish, with only 5 being trout. Spoons and cranks both worked, but a small jointed rapala was the hot ticket. In a time where NO other presentation would work, this Rapala on 4 colors of lead on a board was unstoppable.

It seemed as the lakers were scattered from 6 to 35 feet below the surface, with salmon being concentrated around 30 feet. We kept our speeds around 2.5 mph as i knew there were more salmon around than lake trout. No big kings came in, but coho’s and smaller kings were abundant.

Using snapweights, leadcore and torpedo weights we easily got any bait in the boat to 35 plus feet, eliminating the need for downriggers. SO walleye guys’ grab your troling gear if you want a change of pace and get up and troll for salmon as they are very abundant and concentrated right now.

Around Duluth you may want downriggers as the water is warmer and murky but quickly clearing up. Looking at the modis images, we shoud be back to normal clarity in 2 weeks or so depending on weather. A big east wind would help a lot!

Stay tuned as those who get out are going to have some great reports in the weeks to come! Fishing is back on on the north shore!

    Grant:

Walleye fishing for Salmon. I think that’s what I like about your reports most Grant. Keep it simple, rely on existing equipment where possible, and invest in a few small items that make it easier to do a good job out there.

That said, fill us all in on what a torpedo weight is. Pros, cons? Why not stick just to leadcore and snapweights?

Is the MN side of lake Superior is only 1 line per angler, or is different?
Usually lake trout fish the WI waters where I can fishh 3 lines.
    Thanks

You guys tend to do things a little differently up there on Lake Superior but the end result appears to be the same. Fish on the line!
    Thanks for the report!

I think this may be what Grant was referring to when he mentioned Torpedo weights.
    Torpedo Divers

They are actual weights not divers as the name proclaims.

And I should have been up there this last weekend…grrrrrr

Hopefully Murphy has had enough fun with me and I’ll maybe get up here next weekend.

Just have to put the boat in the water and make sure it don’t sink.

    Thanks for the report.

You can use 2 lines per person! Not as good as wisconsin, but better than inland MN lakes

Yeah more or less they act like downriggers for those who dont have them. Connect to your line with a OR-16 clip and have a 8 inch leader down to the weight and bombs away! I have my rod set in the holder the same way i do when im fishing bottom bouncers. I use a 9 foot medium cabelas trolling rod for this. You can actually reach depths to 100 feet with the heavier weights! Pretty cool!

Anybody know any decent guide services or someone with a boat and a willingness to take a couple novices out for this? I have a buddy who’s been through a lot over the last year and is talking about using some of his divorce settlement (when it finally comes…) to schedule a guided trip to Superior or Michigan for salmon. He’s done it once and still goes not length about how awesome it was.

I’d like to get him out for this… I think the pick-me-up would do him a ton of good.

Sounds like a BLAST and thanks for the post!

Those torpedo divers are very cool.

Grant, how was the water clarity doing up north of duluth, were you guys fishing a ways off shore this week?

I am hoping to get up the north shore or back to Bayfield in the next couple of weeks, the heat in the city is getting very old!

    Thanks for the updates.
