Ive tried my luck a few times now fishing the mouth of the brule and other rivers in the area for the runs that occur in august and september. usually early in the season the one bait shop I know of in iron river doesnt have spawn bags just yet. I recently found a supplier from further north that carries fresh coho, rainbow, chinook, and brown eggs/roe. these four enter the tributaries at different times depending, but from what Ive heard/read in the order of browns, salmon, then steelhead. Im leaning towards the coho eggs myself, but would like to hear what any other angler that has used spawn either from the bait shop or fresh out of the fish itself.

I have had my best luck up there with chinook eggs out of skein. But it could be because I thought they were the easiest to tie into a bag.

Cohos are fall spawners so I think I’d try getting a few hen fish to get some spawn skeins from and do the Borax thing to cure it and tie it up yourself.

Steelheads are spring fish along with loopers and most of the spawn bags I’ve used in the spring were done with looper spawn and it worked fine on steelies.

thanks guys for the replies. they chinook eggs sure have a different look to them as well. youre right on it ct, thats my end goal, to use these supplied eggs to acquire a fresh supply. the fish Ive caught before were either sublegal steelhead or male pinks so no chance to save their eggs.

Fresh eggs make the best bags. I didnt think it was legal to sell them? I have mainly used fresh steel head spawn to catch them and browns.
