Live bait options for Trout/Salmon

Just curious, I’ve been reading a bit about live bait or attractants for trout and such on the great lakes.

I’ve read something about tuna fish oil coating some kind of lure to attract fish?

And any suggestions on what and how live bait is used?

Would jigging be best for live bait…whatever it is that’s used??

I’m having a hard time imagining a slip bobber in 75 fow, but figure what the heck…maybe?

Are you talking winter fishing or open water?

I’ll toss out a sucker minnow or a crawler under a float while I cast the breakwater in Two Harbors, but I only fish ten feet down….plenty of action at times from salmon and loopers. Even a laker in the spring or early fall will smack a sucker minnow fished like this.

I can’t answer for the thru-the-ice if that’s what you are asking. I keep my lard off any ice on that lake….seen way too many mishaps that required help getting back to terra firma. I saw ten, maybe 12 guys on an ice sheet near Duluth fishing one day and one asked about the rocks moving in his hole. You guessed it.

    Sorry, wet water fishing.
Thinking bobbers or jigs off the side of the boat maybe??
    Depending on wind.

If you are in a stopped boat over deep water, jigging a tube or a hair jig with stinger and a dead sucker minnow is hard to beat. A Medium Heavy casting rod of 6-7 feet and a reel spooled with crystal or power pro and a five foot fluoro leader will work great. 12 pound on the braid, 10 or 12 pound on the fluoro.

Al….pm me your name and mailing address. I’ll send you something I make for jigging tubes that you might like. I know you will. I’ll even rig it in something that works better than a tube or a hair jig/minnow.
