Trying to convince the wife that she’ll like fishing superior, but she’s not real comfortable on big lakes.

Just wondering along the Duluth to Grand Marais side, how far off of shore most go to catch trout and such?

With the wife, reinforce the CALMING nature of ROCKING on the water. Worked with most GFs, but not FW.

Fish can be anywhere. When they are pushing forage fish up on shore for feeding, they can be 18″ off shore. Study the water the same way you would any other water and cast to those spots. Quite effective under the right conditions.

When the waves are 4-5′, the best fishing is ALWAYS on shore…

We are usually 1 to 5 miles off the north shore. In the spring time, it is common to be right up next to shore, especially if you want to target steelhead and loopers, but other than that its usually around 1 to 5 miles. If it is safe to be 1 mile out, it will be safe to go 5.

    Thanks.

Calming the wife usually requires large amounts of thorazine…:)

Actually the 1-5 mile number should work well, she’s thinking far greater distances then that.

That makes getting off in case of rough water much quicker and should make her (and me) feel better.

    Just do what feels comfortable.

Lake Superior is an unforgiving mistress 24/7, so just go slow.

Thanks Stu, courtesy of a day on Milacs with 45 mph winds in a rain storm in a 16 foot boat a few years back, the wife is a bit apprehensive about big water and rough conditions.

    Slow it is.

Mid-August thru September you can be right near shore out of Two Harbors. There are some humps maybe 1/2 mile away from the end of the breakwater that give up lots of trout either by trolling of jigging on calmer days and the structure along the breakwater on the lake side holds lots of fish including salmon at that time. We’ve talked with people walking one the breakwater while trolling beside it. Close enough?

Thanks, I’ll probably ask again for spots come spring, but I’ll add all this to my notes.

    Oh…dumb question, but what’s a Looper?
