We had our first snow fall for the season just a dusting most of the storm hit to the south and east of here. Just getting set to switch gears and get things cooking for the up coming hard water season. If the temps stay on track from here on we should be fishing the inland lakes around the first part of December. From there we will be in high gear after some hot inland Panfish & Pike action for a few weeks while waiting for the Chequamegon Bay to make enough ice to walk on. Use caution first ice “spikes, spud bar, pfd, rope, and a fishing partner is a must. This year we are looking at great fishing for Browns, Splake & Perch early ice on the bay. Due to the great stocking efforts the Brown Trout numbers are up and we are expecting a great ice season for them inside the Chequamegon Bay and Apostle Islands area. We are targeting these fish from northern shoreline the head of the bay working our way right along to Washburn and right around Houghton Point to Pikes Creek area. Than as Ice forms in the Apostles We are fishing for them near shore around the islands. We are generally fishing shallow for them from as little to 4 ftow to 30ftow and sometimes a little deeper. He in WI we are able to use 3 lines so on most of my trips I will run two Automatic Fisherman spooled with a good 6lb co-poly or Berkley Vanish. On my first I like to send down a spawn sack 1 to 2ft off the bottom with a small split shot above it, The second Automatic is set up with a snelled hook with a loop lock because I can open it just a bit to fish wigglers “mayfly” on it I push the first two legs in and very easy pull back the loop to keep the wiggler alive so it can swim below with no problems with another small split shot above it as well. My third is a rod in hand I like to start off with medium sized pimples tipped with a fathead or lake shiner. Other lures I use a lot of are rattle spoons, jigging raps, small flyers & when the current is not bad Williams spoons are deadly. My top picks in colors for all are white, black , silver, copper, blue / silvers green / silvers. Keep posted for more weekly reports as we change over and gear for ice season. Think ICE! Good luck and be safe.

Looking forward to the upcoming season with a vengence. I believe the hardwater bite this year is going to be excellent, I can’t wait til early inland ice. Thier are some killer lakes for gills, pike, and even some trout here in Beautiful Bayfield county.

Out the dooor for a bit this afternoon went down to the near by marina to find it locked it nice with a 1/2″ of ice very nice to see. If we get a few colder nights of ice making Im going to pull the Troller and spud bar out and give a few perch and smallies inside the marina a bad day. The rest of the bay is wide open yet. A good portion of the inland lakes are capt over and looking good I will soon be on them in the next couple weeks stay tune.

Off the Ashland side of the bay today found it iced out a 100 yards from shore from the west side of the power plant all the way to the head of the bay Fish Creek area. Calm cool 35 keep the wind and temps down and we are looking good. For some of you visiting the bay there are some great spots one can get out to easy and be on fish. The first would be right on the Ashland side of the bay again out from the old soo line ore dock from the kreher park boat launch. Spots to try are out near the channel near the red and green marker cans working your way to the west from there tords the power company and no further than the end of the coal dock. Smallies are the main action however you never know what you can land into from coho’s splake, walleyes, perch & a few pike near shore off the slab piles.
From there heading for Washburn west on Hwy 2 to hwy 13 north from there head 3.6 miles up and on the right hand side there is Bono Creek boat launch. This is another great early ice spot that has good parking. Fishing here is one of my go to’s for early ice chaseing browns, splake, and whitefish, You can work the shore line both ways left or right fishing 20ftow and under. Keep in tune for more reports and tips.
