So, finally getting caught up with a lot of stuff here – been a very busy summer on the water here. With catching up, thought I would give a run down on whats been happening in the Chequamegon Bay and Apostle Islands area of Lake Superior.
First off, fishing for Lake Trout has been LIGHTS out this year – for both table fare fish (25 inches and under) and big fish – 15lbs +. Been catching these fish both trolling and jigging, with some great numbers – full day trips we have been putting 20 or more fish in the net, best day was 42 this year.
SmallMouth – a bit spotty right now, but we are still catching WHOPPERS that the bay is known for. Some days its 10 fish and then the next day its 30 fish. Typical summer feeding patterns out here. Weeds have been key.
Walleyes – were good early, shallow. Then pretty slow – now a bit more stable. Cranks and harness fishing has been good, with some good sized fish in the mix. Not huge numbers, but what the numbers lack, the size takes over.
And with September coming, things should get even a bit better – especially on the SmallMouth front. Then as Oct and November roll around, near shore trout and salmon should be gangbusters and fall smallie fishing should be LIGHTS OUT.
Hope everyone else has been having a great summer!!
