Well old Mother Nature finally gave us a break from the winds today, and I along with the 87 other boats at the landing headed out. I launched a little before 5 and was met with the largest lake in the world being a sheet of glass. Water temps ranged from 48 to 54 and the water clarity went from bad to worse lol. You could actually see your prop in some places today, so its an improvement.
I started out pulling Deep Husky Jerks and Deep Little Rippers in 40 to 50 fow. As the sun came up, i threw out some chrome baits to make a little flash in the water, despite it being so muddy. I had my baits down 15 to 20 feet over 50 fow. Trolling 2.4 mph, I found a school of king salmon and now i remember what Lake Michigan is like lol! Biggest went 33 inches, followed by some a little smaller. The coho’s were in the area too, as i along with a few other boats got into a few. It was a good morning on the water, almost too nice as the bluebird skies and lack of waves made the fish drop to the bottom once 10 am came. My drags on the sealine’s sure got a good workout today, its a good bonus when we get kings in the area, let alone kings over 10 pounds. I kept one for the grill, you cant beat salmon on the grill with a little lemon pepper, garlic and lemon!
If you are heading out, stay away from the dark muddy water where you cant even see your prop. I have best luck where i can see the prop, maybe the silhouette of it, but no darker. I was surprised to see kings in this color of water but they were there today. Keep the speed a little slower in darker water, but still over 2 mph.
