I was at the cabin in Two Harbors for ten days and just got back home yesterday. The boat stayed home this trip as it was primarily a fix-up run having the cabin been broken into over winter and whoever was kind enough to leave the door wide open.

I did manage some fishing off the breakwater and for the most part found it more a time of rinsing the dust off tackle than catching fish, but I did have a number of follows and some chasers. I think my count was eight trips to the wall to cast and in that timeframe only had one hook-up. I have noi idea what hit, but it spooled me of my new 8 pound Crystal….all 125 yards of it. The fish hit in water about 70 feet deep and made a run towards a shel that drops down into much deeper water. Then it slowed and turned towards the lake and things went downhill from there. I tried to tighten down a bit but the reel started to jump so I had to let off the drag a little again. Just wasnt meant to be. When the fish got the reel to the 6 pound backing we parted company. Leaves a lot to the imagination but I suspect a laker.

The water up there was still cold and the wind was off the lake every day. The lake is low by about a foot from last fall, but the rain we saw on Sunday night [4.5″] should help re-charge things. Every creek and river we saw down as far as the French was running hard and high yesterday morning.

No fish, but time spent playing along the shores of that big puddle are precious. We had two different sow bears each with twin cubs in the cabin yard each evening and on a ride we saw a cow moose with brand new twin calves. Tons of deer were seen. The animals made up for the lack of fish.

Sounds like a fun relaxing trip. Just goes to prove it’s not always about the catching
    Thanks for the read

I haven’t unloaded the camera and pics yet. I am hoping the zoom got me close enough to the moose. I really wasn’t too crazy about the idea of trying to get closer….those animals have a bad temper when they have little ones nearby. I don’t run or roll very well anymore, so I let the thought pass.

    Tom:

When you have runner like that you ever try the karate chop to the rod??? It is amazing, but I have had it stop big runners like that before!!! I have also lost fish exactly as you have.

Yep….did the chop thing. No go.

I took the spool apart this morning and found some accumulation of crud under one washer, hence the shakey run-off. Got that resolved now, but sure wish I would have thought to check the drag assembly BEFORE I left for the shore. Live and learn, eh?
