There have been a few getting caught. I stumbled on a few in 100 fow the other day with my cranks 4 feet below the surface. I know Mark has some luck today, I’m sure he will chime in here. The shallow bite will just be starting around Duluth here. Our water has just recently warmed up from 34 degrees to low 40’s, so once these east winds quit, fishing should be good.

Laker. Very good eating with orange meat and beautiful fin colors as the name implies. One of the two varieties found in the big lake. The other is a Sissowet. Very oily and yellow meat….not much good on a plate.

I have been considering my first trip to LS this weekend and I have a few general questions.

Generally how busy is the north shore on LS on the mn opener?

Is the fishing any better the farther you head up the shore?

I have read plenty about trolling tactics, are there any specific tactics for jigging? Or areas to look for?

    Thanks

Big gill, the MN opener has ZERO effect on the amount of people fishing the North Shore of lake superior. If anything there will be less people. Fishing should be good out there this weekend, we have had east winds for awhile now so a lot of warm water has blown in and it will make those fish eat.

As far as how far up to go…….If you want to jig for lake trout, I would fish out of Two Harbors, there are some humps out there people jig. You will have to launch from Knife River Marina tho, due to the reconstruction of the Two Harbors landing.

If you want to troll; head up the shore for lake trout or stay in Duluth/Superior for salmon and brown trout and the occasional laker. Right in front of the Superior entry will have a variety of fish.

If you have any other q’s or want to talk on the phone PM me and we can go over more.

The bay next to the Two Harbors campground is launchable….or supposed to be….while the other is being reconstructed. I’ll be up there for a week and a half beginning Friday. No boat, but plan to fish the breakwater if they haven’t screwed that up too.

Is that the temporary beach access Tom? I forgot about that one. Don’t they say only boats up to 20 feet are able to launch here?

Thats the one Grant. I’m still having some questions about launching there without some seriously needed concrete ramps being added and that would be for any boat. 20 foot was the max that comes to mind as to boat length caabilities.
