Thinking about making a self guided trip with a few others to the Isle. Has anyone been there with their own boat, that could suggest a route and good fishing “areas”. Thinking of a 5 day trip. Day 1 heading from Grand Portage to Windigo and heading out from there. Looking for good Laker and Coho fishing and “typical” areas that have some weather protection once there. SE and E sides would seem most logical to me. Early to mid July time frame pending stable weather.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Webstj I go there at least once a year for lake trout and the occasional steelhead. I could sit here on my phone and type for hours about the island. There are a lot of options on where and when to fish. If you have some specific questions pm me your number and i can give ya a call and we can chat.

Staying in windigo is nice since it’s close so If you have a 30 foot boat that gets 1.2 mpg, you won’t need to fill up out there where gas is 5.25 a gallon. And if you want to run to skiskwit it’s not horribly far. Lots of good (numbers) fishing in the area. I haven’t seen numbers of 20 pounders from the area but there are a lot of nice 5 to 7 pound redfins, with 10 to 13 pounders mixed in.

When I get home and can type on the computer I can give more info, it gets old very fast on the I phone lol
