Myself and a friend headed out to French to target crappies for a few hours in the afternoon. On our way to the lake we drove past Roberds, which looked like a small city on the north end. When we arrived at French we headed away from the crowds and set up in 38 feet of water. Within a minute the spring bobber on the St. Croix was indicating I had a fish interested in my presentation. I set the hook and had decent 9 inch fish on the ice. After having a nice fish fry last week, I decided I wanted to have another, so I decided I would keep a few. The fish gods must have decided that was a bad idea because the bite shut off for me after that first fish. My friend still managed to keep on bringing them up through the hole, and I would occasionally see my spring bobber move. I’d bring one up for every 5 he was getting.

We were using a variety of presentations, with no single presentation out shining any other. Mixing it up seemed to produce the most bites. Jigs included pink/white demon, firetiger mini mert, glow red mini mert, and brown teardrops. Jigs were tipped with either a wax worm or crappie minnow. The bigger fish we caught tended to prefer the crappie minnows.

Cool photo. I used to fish Mazaska and French a lot in the winter with Mazaska getting most of my time. The bite out there started late, after 9 PM for the best bite, and the best fish always came suspended out over deep water but it was worth it as a fair number of the crappies iced would run 11″ – 12″ most years with the occasional biggie.

Thanks for the update. Keep ’em coming!
