HI BILL, SOME BIGGER BASS ARE GETTING ACTIVE ON CEDAR AND SHEILDS LAKES. CEDAR LAKE ON WEDNESDAY WAS WINDY, BUT I CAUGHT 18 BASS FROM NOON TO DARK. 10 FISH OVER 2 POUNDS WITH 4 OVER 3LBS. BLACK LIZARDS TEXAS STYLE WERE GOOD IN THE SHALLOWS, AND A 3/8 OUNCE JIG AND CRAW WITH RATTLES IN 14-16FT IN FRONT OF THE MILFOIL.
OUT ON THE GENERAL ON THURSDAY WITH CALM WINDS. CAUGHT 17 BASS FROM NOON ON. 3 FISH OVER 4LBS WITH A 19 INCHER THAT WEIGHED IN AT 5LBS EVEN. NICE GIRTH. 10 OF THESE BASS OVER THREE POUNDS WITH ONE AT 4.75LB. THROW THE BIGGEST WORMS YOU GOT WITH A RATTLE. THE LAKE IS ABOUT 1.5 FEET DOWN FROM NORMAL AND YOU HAVE TO PROP YOUR MOTOR UP AND TROLL OUT FROM ACCESS. THE BEST FISHING ON THESE LAKES FOR BASS FOR ME ARE FROM 9-1 TO MID OCTOBER

I was reading your post and thought you must have loaded the boat riding a wave from the grass island on Shields. Actually I thought it was yesterday…9/11 you meant. That would have been a bear launching on Shields in a 25 mph south wind. I wish that area at the end of the dock could get dredged out while the water is low and then Cannon could use a dredging at the access and from Warsaw to King mill dam too. LOL. Well if you get tired of bass fishing there’s a hot night bite on Cannon…..big, big, bruiser bullheads. I think the bullheads have eaten all the walleyes.

Are the panfish still biting pretty good? And if so, which methods are working best? Thanks, Bill

I went out Sunday afternoon and evening on Cedar. My first time on the lake. Milfoil is dying off, so i tried fishing a rattletrap for some largemouth. No bass on the trap, but I caught the biggest walleye of my life! About a 12-pounder. Didn’t have a net, so released her at the side of the boat. Caught that fish in REALLY shallow water, only about 2-3 feet, kind of surprised me.
I did manage to get on a largemouth pattern later in the evening. Caught fish up near shore in the scattered weeds with buzzbait and swimming a jig. Some nice bass in that lake! Not another boat in sight, which was really nice!

A friend of mine who fishes Cedar has told me many stories of the crank bite in 2′ of water for walleyes while fishing for bass. He said he had one of the hottest walleye action of his life one Saturday morning trying to crank in some bass. Something to keep in mind if walleye searching on Cedar.

The strange thing about that lake is how the fish will hold on shorelines in anywhere for 2-8 foot of water anywhere there is vegetation. I have had some of my best luck on that lake fishing a jig through the clumps, Of course there are some better shorelines then others, but in general if you find some green clumps you will find bass. Also, try looking at mid-lake structure, it is shallow but there might be some rocks or something out there not marked

    NICE RELEASE ANCHOR.
I’VE RELEASED A LOT OF BASS THIS YEAR IN THE 3.5 TO 4.0 LB RANGE ON CEDAR. I HAVE NOT CAUGHT ANYTHING OVER 5 THOUGH. I AM SURPRISED THAT THERE WERN’T MORE BOATS OUT ON A SUNDAY. SOME BIGGER BASS ARE CAUGHT OUT THERE FROM NOW UNTIL MID OCTOBER.

    Sports Anchor,
Keep trying out there and you’ll find some bigger eyes than 1 – 2 pounds. Maybe even a 78 pounder.
