Hi, Can anyone advise me on best bet locations for bass and/or musky on Lake Zumbro? I’ll be out on the lake for the first time this year on Tuesday evening. Tackle tips would also be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Lew

i don’t mean to dampin your spirits, but fishing on lake zumbro has been extreemly tough lately !

i’ve been out several times in the last week, both early morning and late evening. i’ve only caught a few white bass and a couple little slimers. that’s it. i’ve seen a few bass but they wouldn’t bite anything i had . i haven’t been using any type of bait, so maybe that would help. you can catch all the sunnies you want on a worm and bobber combo.

as far as where to look for some bass, i’d just fish some of the steep banks, in and around the logs. try some light weight soft plastics and see if you can’t coax something in to biting.

i have caught a few muskies this spring and summer, but the biggest one was only about 16″ . i know there’s has to be bigger ones in there, i just have never caught one .

…now if you really want to have some fun on lake zumbro, bring a bow along and shoot some roughies . the carp are up so shallow right now it’s not even fair some times. i got two with one shot the other day .

hope that this helps a bit and please let us know how you do.

What’s your best guess Jake? Is fishing slow due to the warm weather or due to all the boating activity caused by the warm weather? Thanks for your input. Lew

on a hot day, the boat traffic can get pretty ridiculous in the afternoon and eveings. all the big power boats pulling tubers and skiers making big wakes that crash the shore line doesn’t help the fishing any. the day i went out in the morning it as really hot and muggy. they weren’t biting then either. i guess it’s kind of a pick your poison situation .

…actually, i was doing pretty good on small mouth in the river up to about a week ago. it seems like they are becoming harder to come by recently, too. i don’t have a clue why that is???

maybe all the fish are just taking an extended vaction for the 4th and they’ll be back soon…..hopefully

I believe on Tues. nights the local Bass Club has their weekly fun tournaments so it could be a good night to drive around on the lake and see where and how everyone is fishing. Its mostly a shoreline bite for bass so casting crankbaits, ringworms and tubes or Kalins should get you some fish. Good luck and let us know how you do. Thanks, Bill

Well, we found several boats sitting in Ryans Bay and they appeared to have the same luck we did. We could see bass in the shallows, but nothing we threw at them peaked their interest. We fished from about 6:30 to 8:30 and I finally picked up our only fish just before we called it a night. I picked up a nice 15 inch smallie on a tube bait just across from the Ponderosa boat landing. Since my partner and I only get out on Lake Zumbro about once a year I am neither disappointed or surprized by our results. I’m just glad I’m the one that didn’t get skunked.

For those of you that do fish Lake Zumbro, has the lake been this clear all summer? In Ryan’s Bay I could see my lure nearly 8 feet. Is this a direct result of the zebra mussels in the lake? Has the fishing been tougher because of the water clarity?

    Fish On!

The water has cleared up from what it use to be and I’m guessing the Zebs had something to do with it. The Zumbro has always had very dirty water before. Same thing happened on Lake Pepin as the water cleared up after the Zebs got in there. Hope you have better luck next time. If things are slow next time, try trolling shad raps and roostertails along the shorelines across from Fishermans Inn heading down towards Ryans bay for white bass. They aren’t as plentifull as they use to be but they do like to cooperate with fisherman and grab your lure. Thanks, Bill
