Went to Mazaska again today. I wanted to hit shields today but the road was in really rough shape this morning, so I choose to hit Mazaska as there was a decent road out to one of the 35 fow holes I like to fish.

Caught 30-40 crappies today, but only 1 keeper(12.5 inches pic included) the rest were border line keepers. I caught the 12.5 right away so I figured I would keep some for dinner, but the rest were 8 inches or less so I came home with the one to clean.

Today was very tough to figure out jigging pattern day, it took me a while to figure out that soon as they came in from jigging to just let the jig sit completely still and then they would stare at little bit and then take it, but very light bite. If you raised the jig or moved it at all they would take off fast.

Spring bobbers were a must today. I used #16,14’s red diamong jig, red shrimpo, black shrimpo, and a very small jr’s rattler spoon in silver.

On the way out the road was flooded with about 2-3 inches of water from where the snow piled up, so be carefull next couple of days with this warm weather coming in. Thanks Mike

Thanks for the report. That lake has some very nice crappies in it. I’ve caught my biggest crappies there trolling open water with crankbaits. Yep crankbaits. Thats how big they get there. Thats not what I was fishing for at the time but it did teach me something. Can’t wait to read your open water reports. Theres alot of lakes in that area that I’m sure you and others are aware of. Those open water reports that I hope you will share with us will help us all become better anglers On the southern Minnesota lakes. THANKS.

    Thanks, Bill

ps. I personally get excited when I see big crappies like that.

You’ve got that right Jack. The older I get the more I just plain love fishing. And fishing for more than just walleyes too. Multispieces fishing has been a blast the past couple years. But I do love catching crappies. Always have. Use to take Nate when he was much younger down to Lake Zumbro for crappie fishing and trolling crappie jigs for big whitebass. We had alot of 60-88 fish evenings back then. Then I made the mistake of having him fish a walleye tournament with me when he was 8 years old. He hasn’t been the same since. He says the only time he feels normal now is when hes fishing a tournanment. I think hes addicted. Fishing is fun no matter what spieces you are fishing for. Theres just something special about being on the water.
    Thanks, Bill
