I hit the lake in the morning and it did not take long to find them. I worked the outside areas of a deep hole where it drops back into shallower water with a 1/16 red glow buckshot which is one of my favorites for these lakes. I also used a glow green shrimpo with a red body(no bait) and a custom jigs and spins blue glow demon. The spoons required a minnow head as the fish did not want anything to do with waxies or spikes. Right away I pulled out a nice 10 incher and a little while later lost 2 that would have been my new personal best at the hole as the lining in their mouth ripped(That cracked me).

I unwound my drag a bit to help prevent that tearing and although I never got another chance at the big ones we caught a ton of fish in the 9-11 inch range. Fishanator brought his kids out about 11am and they set up camp next to me and they were catching them non stop also. Here are a couple of pics of the 1st 10.5-11 inch crappies and nice 8.3/4 gill that hit my buckshot. Otherwise nator kept enough for supper for his family and we threw the rest back. Also all of the fish I caught were suspended in the water column from 22-11 fow. Thanks Mike

Thanks for the report and pics. Great to see the kids involved. I have a question though: what is a red glow buckshot lure? I haven’t heard of those before.
    Thanks, Bill

    Great report!
Shields is a really fun lake to fish. Great panfish lake, along with some super-bass here and there!

Do you get out there a lot in the winter?
