On Lake Zumbro, a wide area on the Zumbro River north of Rochester, across from the Ponderosa Supper Club they are catching crappies and a 14 lb. northern was caught from there today. Sucker minnows were the bait for northerns.

    hey bill,

do know if the crappies were on the bottom or suspended. i would like to go out and try lake zumbro again but last time i went the only people catching them had fish finders. i don’t have a fish finder, and you might as well stay at home if there not right close to the bottom.

here’s another question. can you fit a 14lb northern through a 8″ hole???

I’ve been busy being sick and attending funerals recently and add work into that and that hasn’t left much time to fish. I have been on Roberds, French, and Kelly Dudley most recently.
Roberds–I went to fish for bluegills with the boy a couple hours and found some nice bluegills in the 8-10 inch range, but not many. Some smaller gills, perch, and 6-8 inch walleyes in between. I was fishing a mud/sand flat. Nothing notable for location…the fish just roam it….and sometimes many fish roam it.

French–I went out to fish crappies at 6:30 p.m. after leaving Roberds. I caught some crappies in 40-42 ft. of water and they were tightly suspended. Areas where the crappies were loosely suspended didn’t produce as many biters. Getting around on French is nuts….due to the number of fishing shelters.

Kelly Dudley–I fished an afternoon…lazily. I set 4 tip-ups with large shiners and chubs and sat in the truck with the heater on and on shore with the boy and waited for flags. Only 2 flags in 2 and a half hours with one 22″ in pike and one just shy of 30″.

I generally use custom jigs and spins demons for panfishing (#6) hooks. Purple and green are my first choice of color. Sometimes blue works well, but it’s #3 on the list. Good Luck TGIF.

Nate was working on a house out there and the guy that caught the fish noticed the stickers on Nates truck so he showed Nate his fish. I don’t know if they were on the bottom or not. A northern should fit through that size hole if brought through carefully. I haven’t been able to get out yet due to knee surgery. Let us know how you do if you get out there. Should be other people out on the the weekends so you could ask them how far down the crappies are. Sorry I can’t be more help. Thanks, Bill

    hey all,

we fished right across from ponderosa, along the steep bank. didn’t talk to anyone because everyone was in a shack. i don’t like to bother people when they’re in their shack.

There is a flat over there, try that. And knock on a door and ask them how they are doing. Most people will tell you when ice fishing unless they want to keep all the fish for themselves. Thanks, Bill
