I have always wanted to try cat fishing through the ice…and I did last friday nite out on Sakatah. Problem was I was in pursuit of walleyes which I did find earlier. But I iced 4 channel cats in about an hour and a half well after prime time after 8 pm to be more specific. All about 5 to 7 pounds! I was jigging a bright glowing spoon with shiner heads that came out of previously iced walleyes. After dropping 17 bucks on bait I used every single piece I had till it was gone!
I was actually still out on the ice long after everyone else was gone testing for a way late after dark walleye bite….which didn’t happen, but those cats sure made up for it. I caught all of them jigging very aggressively or what I call the frustrated…something better come to the hole soon before I get bored out of my mind and leave this dead sea type jigging approach. It was a blast though….even if they weren’t walleyes! I’m glad I stuck it out a little longer. I hope to hook into some more cats and bigger one’s soon!
