It seems mother nature has taken a day off as temps. climbed above 35 degrees today coupled with 15-25 mph winds. I was going out on the ice that I had traveled 2 days prior and it seemed worse. The cracks had water coming up from them and with the light snow that was melting on the ice there were puddles that were an inch deep on top of the ice. I got a little nervous crossing some of them. I got out to where I planned to fish a found the wind to be blowing in pretty gusty. I went alone so I had to keep a close eye on the portable so it didn’t blow over on the newest ice (2 1/2 inches). I did catch some fish. Mostly small walleyes today, one white bass, one 3-4 lb. pike. I tried a new jigging spoon or new for me anyway…it was the Angel Eye spoon by Scenic Tackle. Hammered gold with a red eye and red trebles. The walleyes, although small hit it good for about an hour. I tipped it with a fathead rocked it back and forth in the mud and the ‘eyes went right down after it. I went home with 3 eater walleyes (my personal limit) and released everything else.
Interestingly I started out the week on Mon. I noticed the barometric pressure at 30.50 inches….real high. I have found that in the past 4 out of 5 days of fishing that the bite—the actual intensity of the walleyes strikes increased dramatically—although I didn’t fish the same areas with the same lures either. When I got home tonight the barometer was down in the 29.80 range. Maybe it’s concidence….maybe not.
Leave some fish in the lakes for me this weekend….I spent plenty of years drowning minnows in some of these lakes to the point that I didn’t think there was a single fish in them some days.
Stay Dry!
