Heading to the Waterville area this weekend, will be near Horseshoe Lake. Any suggestions? Should I bring any gear? Is this a panfish/northern/bass lake?

Never heard of that lake down there. Sakata has a good population of Walleye though I hear.

    I think not…

The lake I’m referring to is just north of Sakatah, north of 230th St W where Le Sueur Ave merges (just west of there, 230th St W becomes 480th St).

    Here’s the lake:

Never heard of that one. Good luck. I have no sources on that one.

I grew up in southern MN and I’ve never heard that name mentioned a single time.

Maybe you found a nice little sleeper lake.

    Here’s a lake survey from 2003.

    Quote:

Status of the Fishery (as of 06/30/2003)
Horseshoe Lake is located northeast of Waterville on the Rice – Le Sueur County boarder. Horseshoe Lake had low oxygen conditions in the winter of 2000 to 2001 that resulted in some winterkill of fish. A fishery survey was conducted in 2003 to monitor the fish community and habitat in Horseshoe Lake. Northern pike are abundant in Horseshoe Lake and should provide excellent angling. Most were around 20 to 30 inches in length. Some walleye are present and were around 13 inches in length. Black crappie, bluegill, and yellow perch are present in moderate numbers. Panfish populations are recovering from the winterkill and may provide increasing angling opportunities in the next few years. Black bullhead are abundant, although most fish were around only 4 to 5 inches long.

You can find the rest of the report here >>> Horseshoe Lake

Do note that bass were not shown in any of the test nets so if you’re a bass guy this lake definitely isn’t for you. The pike fishing sounds like it might be pretty good for numbers.

Thanks all for the info… I only had a few hours to fish over the weekend and didn’t have a boat (was going to go out in a canoe but the winds kept me shore-bound. The area I was at was pretty darn shallow – caught a few small panfish but had no action on trying for pike.

From what I saw, the lake was quite shallow all the way around – might be a fun lake to try through the ice though…
