The shore fisherman on Cannon Lake of the Cannon River Chain are outfishing the boat fisherman. The bridge seperating Cannon from Wells Lake is the best area to fish from shore. There is current and lots of rocks along the road and casting a jig with minnows or crawlers will catch you some eyes. Let the jig sit there for awhile with a tight line and watch the rod tip for tattle tale signs of walleye or perch on the other end.
Even better yet, fish this area in the evening with a lighted slip bobber and a minnow. Its always fun to watch a lighted bobber go under in the dark as an eye takes it down towards the bottom.
For the dieharded boat fisherman who just can’t bring themselves to leave the boat at home , you will be able to catch a few eyes by trolling jointed raps in 8 to 10 feet of water. Tolling speeds vary between 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 mph. You will find a few nice eater size walleyes with this method but not as many fish as the shore fisherman are getting. After you take the boat out drive over to the bridge and park the truck and boat along the highway shoulder and try some shore fishing to finish off the day of fishing before heading home. You will be glad you did.
The colder weather seems to be here so make sure you dress very warm especially if you decide to try the evening dark bite before heading home as its cold sitting there on shore as it is in the open area on the water in a boat. But a tug on the end of your line does help to make things alittle warmer. Enjoy the fall fishing while its here as the ice fishing season can’t be too far away if it stays cold out and if you are like me you hate putting the boat away. See you on the water. Bill
