The fishing (before the latest weather) has been excellent for walleye. In 2 hours we had over 20 fish in the boat. They all ranged from 15 to 19 inches. It seems the shad kill that took place at winter’s end has really put them on a feeding frenzy. There was a 15 minute stretch where 6 were pulled up from vertical jigging in 10 feet of water .
The key on Madison is the weedlines using bass like techniques. The bait of choice seemed to be a jig and a crawler (I’m sure leeches and minnows would yield similar results) pulled through the edge of the weeds to the openings. Ideal is to find a weedline and a break in the depth. We were sitting in 11 and casting into 7 (weeds) and vertical jigging in 9 or 10.
The water is well into the 60’s and the clarity is nearly 8ft so you’ll probably want some chop to avoid spooking fish.
Best of Luck.
