Cannon Lake

Decided to try new waters and after looking at the lake maps, creel info, etc., it looked like a great option for walleye or largemouth bass. In fact, it reminded me of the prairie lakes back home in SD….shallow, fertile, with little structure and great for trolling cranks. Not to mention, some great shoreline fishing potential (pitching jigs, chasing bass, etc.). Anyway, fished it Monday with no luck….I am certain the cold front conditions were not in my favor.

So, what can anyone tell me about this lake? No doubt, I’ll be back….I am much too curious to leave it alone.

Slip bobbers after dark on the rock piles right out from the landing, trolling cranks on the river channle can be very good, they really relate to that structure. The narrows where it goes under the highway will also produce.Stuart

I’ve never done very well there during the day but as Stuart said… after dark. October and even November full moon periods can be very productive.

Cannon is a feast or famine lake. Never forget that it IS a river system and fish move in and out of spots a lot. Bass are there, but there are so many other lakes the produce better in the area. Fished Cannon last night and only hooked 4 bass.

Crankbaits have taken lots of fish on Cannon. Shadraps work very well. I have also caught lots of walleyes working the long rock reef/bar point thats out off a ways to the right from the public landing using the good o’l 3-way and floater rig with crawlers. Bottom bouncers and spinners with crawlers will work also. But yes, one day will be hot and the next time you really have to work to figure out the fish.
    Thanks, Bill

Thanks Bill. I am intrigued and will continue to give this lake chance. Any ice fishing on it?

Yes, but it is a dangerous lake due to not only river current but also ”springs” so you must be very carefull. Get a good map that will hopefully show where all or most of them are, always travel with a friend and take a rope and wear a life jacket under your winter coat for extra warmth and safety is smart. Better safe than sorry. Thanks, Bill
