Hi all, decided to take a little jaunt West from Rochester rather than going to the big muddy as I usually do. Fished Hunt and Cedar and had pretty good success. Hunt was a very pleasant surprise as this was the first time I had ever fished it. Very nice average size (2.6-3.3) and plenty of fish. Tough fishing though as they were scattered in the narrow leaf cabbage that seems to run rampant on these farm country lakes in June. All fish (13 total in 4 hours) came on a green pumpkin flippin’ tube and all came from holes and pockets in the cabbage. Saw one monster (6+) cruising the inside weedline but couldn’t get her to take anything. Cedar was a bit of a disappointment. Water is already pretty dingy in most areas and the weeds are even thicker with the unpleasant addition of that moss that sticks to everything! 6 fish in about 2 hours, nothing over 2.5. Half on a black neon tube and half on a watermellon fluke. All in all, it was a great day!

Steve, pretty good day I’d say. good luck on that 6’er, don’t forget the camera. on your first lake were you able to do much site fishing, or just work the weed area. thanks Jack.

Thanks for the report. That 6 pounder has your name on it.
    Thanks, Bill

Regarding sight fishing, I did see a fair number of fish, but all the fish I caught were tucked up in pockets in the cabbage. I couldn’t buy a bite sight fishing!! Tried flukes, trick worms (even wacky rigged), etc. Every trick I know, I tried without success. I think the main reason for this is that the fish I saw were not on beds, simply cruising the inside weedlines. Never saw a single fish on a bed but did see tons of fry, so I’m guessing the spawn has pretty much come and gone, at least on this particular lake.

Excellent post. It does indeed all begin and end with the condition of available habitat. Seems like every lake shore property land owner desires the same thing; a big green lawn down to the water’s edge and a weed free beach. And then they all wonder why the fishing went to heck.
