Gills on fire along with other species

I was bored sitting in the house today so at noon I thought why not sit on the lake for an afternoon.

I started out looking for gills and boy did I find them.

The first spot I hit was a weedline along shore in 5ft of water. I used a small plain hook and a piece of crawler with a bobber set for 18″ deep.

I caught about 5 in that spot and then 4 boats moved in on me. One of them could just have well as got in the boat with me. After the 4 boats moved in, things slowed big time.

Off to a different spot and the same thing again only 2 boats this time.

Off to another location along some lily pads and man this spot had some true bull gills. Only trouble I had was I would start to reel them in and then they would get hung up in the lily pad stems. I had to let some slack in the line for the fish to swim out and then reel again. It was a pain but well worth it.

I tried a few times to light a smoke but could not as the bobber would go down almost as fast as it hit the water.

I fished there for about 45 minutes and had to have landed 75 fish. Then a fellow came walking along shore with his fly rod and waders and said man, you are laying the smackdown on the fish. He then asked me if I had fished the point byt the rocks and I said yes and it was good but after the boats moved in on me I left. I said I do not understand why people have to fish right by another when there is a whole lake to fish. He then preceded to walk out within 30 yards of me and started to fish the same spot I was.

Off to the crappies as I had enough of people crowding me.

I went out off a point and found sound crappie and worked that spot for an hour and picked up my limit of crappie jigging with a minnow in 33fow.

What a day for the bite and people who could not figure out where to fish on thier own.

Water temps were about 73.8 and almost all of the gills were spawned out.

Tried for some eyes for a bit and picked up 2 keepers and said the heck with it and went home.

I had enough fish for a few older neighbors that love fish and I always try to get them a few meals a month.

What more could one ask for in regards to a great bite.

I landed gills, crappie, bass, eyes, some nicer perch and a few sheepheads. The only specie I did not catch was a northern and that was ok with me.

The next day that the weather looks good, I am off to the lake again only this time with my cane pole.

I love to get on a good bite with nicer gills and fight them like I did in my younger days from shore.

I typically do not fish this lake on the weekends as it is typically very busy. Both landings were packed and the lake was very busy.

Guess I may hit a few more days on the weekends when the weather is great.

I have fished this lake for close to 20 years both ice and hard water and I believe this was the best day this lake has ever given me for multiple specie and the size of the gills.

It will only be a short amount of time and one will be able to boat those same gills of the 10-12ft mud flats on this lake pulling crawlers on a spinner set up. That is typically my best bite of the year for gills on this lake.

I talked to the neighbor’s 12 year old son and aske dhim if he would like to go out and catch some panfish.

He was so excited I thought we were going to have to leave this evening.

I would love to have posted some pictures but my camera went kaput on Rainy lake as it got a bit wet when it poured one day over Memorial day weekend.

Seems the lakes in SC MN are still going strong for the gills and crappie. I have found them from 3fow to 10fow.

Also getting some good eye numbers

    Anyone else finding the same??

Hit the lake this am for some gills.

I worked over alot of structure and shallow water to no avail.

So, traveling to another part of the lake I noticed on my graph alot of suspended fish.

I was in 25-27fow and the fish were from 14ft to the bottom.

I pulled out my trusty crawler harness on a lindy rig and went to work. The bite was very good and after an hour, I ran out of crawlers. I caught crappie, perch, gills and 2 eyes with 1 slimer pike.

I then tried a leech on a lindy rig and that was worthless with not one bite after a half hour of working the same area.

I have no idea why these fish were all suspended so deep and not even close to the shallow water.

Water tempos wer 68.9. The coolest I have seen for 2 weeks since the high water temp of 78.5.
