We were up there a week ago and it seems the walleye’s have slowed for a couple of weeks now. Jumbo’s can be found on the mud flats anywhere from 24 FOW to 32 FOW with euro larva – I am sure the Red Door will point you in the right direction.
Most guys getting a pretty good perch bite if your willing to drill the holes and put the work in.
Put the hammer down and report back!~
February 22, 2011 at 12:39 am #940194My favorite baits on Mille Lacs are silver, gold and blue. Or a combination of. I like to jig with several different styles of spoons. However, don’t be afraid to downsize if the fish get finicky. I tend to start out on tops of structure and work my way out/down the break as the day progresses. Ending back on top as the day ends. From what I’ve read this year, the perch and tullies are down off the break away from some of the structure this year.
Trying to get away from people on Mille Lacs isn’t always easy. When you are paying your launch fee, be sure to ask the folks at the Red Door. They are very helpful. If you see a guy who goes by Bobber, get whatever info you can out of him. He’s a great guy who knows the fish well. Lastly, listen to what the folks at the Door say about roads and bridges. Don’t try to cross any open cracks or heaves with your truck.
Most important, have fun and good luck!!!
February 22, 2011 at 3:26 pm #940345I don’t have any particular favorites. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the past on 2 & 3 mile with a lot of success for perch. The north end break has also treated me very well in the past. I’ve only been on the lake once this winter, so I don’t have much to share other than my memories.
What we saw two weekends ago was a lot of lookers, very finicky bite. Both on the mud and in shallow fishing transitions. If you got just off the edges of a flat, you tended to get a lot of tullies. Our group of 5 guys only got 1 eye all day….
February 22, 2011 at 4:41 pm #940393The bite has been tough up there for a few weeks with lots of lookers but no takers so your best bet will be to stay mobile.
The colors that have worked best for me this year have been chartreuse or fire tiger for perch and glow pink or gold for eyes.
Keep in mind the color/jig that’s working best can be different each day or even with different schools of fish. When you’re hole hopping it’s a great idea to carry two rods with different jigs along so that when you’ve got fish coming up to take a look but not hitting you can quickly give them something else to look at… This should help to narrow down exactly what they’re interested in at the moment.
If you’re looking for perch I’d reccomend starting with one rod having a small to medium sized macho minnow or castmaster spoon tipped with euro larva on the 1st rod to bring in the more agressive fish and a second rod with something small like a tear drop or diamond jig/gill pill tipped with a waxie to drop down the hole to entice a bite if they won’t go for the spoon. Another tip when fishing a small lure like that in deep water is to put a decent sized split shot a couple feet above a tiny jig like that to help get it down to the fish quicker.
Good Luck!
