I’m from Rochester and have been fishing the Faribault area for a couple years now and am looking to get into heading further north for some better ice fishing. I’ve only been to Mille Lacs one time and I was about 12 years old, so I don’t remember much. My buddy and I want to make a couple trips up there this winter and I’m just looking for some advice as to when/where/what to use when it come to Mille Lacs winter fishing. Anything helps, have a great season.

Generaly when I fish the pond I fish Mud or DEEP Gravel. The mud flats are very easy to fish if your not lazy or think that you can camp and wait the fish out. The key is going to be MOVE MOVE MOVE! Target less known, small flats that are un named or even some of the bigger more popular flats can be great as long as there are not huge numbers of guys out there. Your going to want to key in on the breaks on the edges of the flats any varyations in the break such as inside turns, outside points, steep walls, slideouts in the rocks, aything that may concentrate fish. General whe coming up to a new flat the first place I check will be the tip of it, sometimes there are more than one tip coming off the flat, IMO the most productive tips are those that arnt “plain jane”, I prefer the broke up and irregular ones, I like to tell my self that the eyes will have better ambush options in those areas thus leading me to beleive my odds are better. Being your new I would plan on heading out of Hunters Point Resorts road or something similar simply because their roads are great and they will point you in the direction of recent action. As for whot to use plan on fishing a dead stick rod or tip up, and a rod with a jigging spoon, silver or gold or perch in a 1/8oz or maybe a tad heavier. The perch action can be AWSOME at times to as well as Tulli fishing, they stink but they eat great smoked with a cold one! Pm when the time is near for your trip and we can talk via phone and Ill let you know what is going on currently. Im no expert but someone had to respond

Give the folks at the Red Door a call. They have nice clean facilities, and are constantly trying to keep their rentals on fish. Also good roads to most of the mud flats on the north end with lots of places to fish as soon as they can get out there. Ya can get into some nice Jumbos too. Note that The Red Door is also a web site sponsor also with almost daily fishing and ice condition reports during the season. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the reply, looks like a great site for the Mille Lacs Lake bound.
