So two things took me by surprise today…

1- Weather.Com is predicting -25 tonight for Aitkin…That should put on an inch or two of ice..

2- A resort on the North side says they might start pulling houses this Wednesday…That seems a little crazy to me especially when they are reporting 7.5’’ of ice in some spots…I’m sure you can get a truck out there with less than recommended ice..but what about the houses flooding out and the roads flooding out. Crazy.

No comment on others judgement dealing with ice and driving etc.

Our guys drilled and checked mid-day(Monday Dec. 13th) and found 7.5 to 8 inches in the same areas they had 5 inches on Friday. The cold has created a split in the ice along shore that was about 4ft. wide this morning but slid together as the sun went higher this afternoon. With very little snow on the ice, the ice making will continue, but at a little slower pace as it gets thicker. And with very little snow insulating the ice, the temperature fluctuation will move the ice more as well. The guys reported deep, hard drifts a foot or more deep in many places as they went further out onto the lake. Many bare spots too.

Looks like the deep freeze is going to be over for awhile. Weather.com is showing single digit low and mild highs for the extended outlook.

Today, Wednesday December 15th, the guys went out and drilled numerous holes in several directions in our area and found 9 inches, consistently, where there was a few inches of snow and 10 to 10.5 inches, consistently, where the ice was bare. Of course, the snow covered areas are far more than the bare spots. So that’s the range we have in the Wealthwood area.

There has been very little fishing going on in our area. No reports directly to us. We hear some locals saying they are doing well in 16ft. of water. But they are fishing to the west a mile, near their homes. We would expect more reports and fishing activity this coming weekend.

Hey Red Door, do you think you will be pulling any houses before Christmas? How is it looking?

If we keep putting on .5 inches per day, I would think sometime next week we should have good drivable ice.

We’ll know more early next week. Check in with the office then. Today the guys found one area, that needs to be driven over to move any houses out, that was 7.5 inches. Average today was about 10.5 inches.

Among some others on the lake also with similar details, we hear the same “rumor”.

Our guys checked on the ice this morning and found very little change from Friday. Most of the ice checks they made ranged from 10.5 to 11.5 inches with a few holes touching 12 inches and a few 9 inches. One hole measured 8.5 inches. They went to one of the mudflats and measured 11 inches.

As we all know, driving on the ice is always a concern. But with less than 12 inches, consistently, the concern grows beyond reasonably safe, in our opinion. So we are on hold with hopes the weekend will bring us to the safety levels needed. As of today, we are only recommending ATV’s and snowmobile ice travel.

Looks to be about 4 inches of fresh snow. It shouldn’t hamper any ATV travel. And, thankfully, probably not enough to cause any flooding. Drifting around bigger houses already out will maybe cause a little extra weight around the house and a little ice sag.

They tried to find a way to get some plowing done today–leading to pulling houses by the weekend(Sunday). There is about 3-5 inches of snow on the ice, with some drifting of 8-10 inches, so it’s pretty nice in that regard but insulating things at the same time. That’s why the plowing effort attempt today. Immediately, they found that ten inches of ice wasn’t enough. The guys spent quite a bit of the morning checking the entire area we have roads and houses placed annually. Consistently, they found between 10 and 11 inches with a few spots of 12 inches. Most areas that have the 10 inches, also have bleeding cracks running through them. There also is a major, active pressure ridge that runs NW to SE, crossing the north end of the Resort flat, the middle of the Bombeck and the south tip of the Weimer flat. The ice on either side is 11 inches.

So we will give the weather a chance to build another inch, at least, hopefully by Sunday, before our guys will give it another go. We’re pretty confident, at least some areas will be safely accessable with full size vehicles and fish houses by late this coming weekend. Simply……10 to 11 inches of ice is too much of a risk in our opinion, as it has been for years, for full size vehicles and a mix of big fish houses and wet cracks. Sunday? Let’s hope so!! To all…Happy Holidays!!

Today, Sunday, we finally got the plows on the ice after checking and findng a consistent 12 inches of ice throughout the area. The east west roads are open and the road to the Weimer/Bombeck area is open. The south end of the Bombeck and beyond is still closed due to a crack. We started pulling the lighter houses and will continue, barring any changes in the ice conditions.

ATV and snowmoble travel is fine off road as well with 4×4’s.

Ice update: All is well with the exception of a new new crack that formed early yesterday on the main road to the flats. We bridged it and hope it is healed by today sometime. So we kept the road open but didn’t attempt to haul big houses across the crack. We’re hoping to access the southern end of Bombeck and beyond soon.

Besides having to bridge two different areas with new cracks to start the day, things are shaping up. Ice checks today in many different areas, from the flats to the shoreline, still are showing 12-13 inches in MOST areas. Cars and trucks speeding at 30mph. and more have been witnessed, amazingly, quite often. It’s only a matter of time and that lack of respect will cost everyone use of what is now a nice road system. So if you see anyone going over 10 mph., please ask them to slow down so the roads will hold up. Please…..

We still can’t access ice via road to the south tip of the Bombeck due to the crack there. We hope to get it bridged by the weekend, if it doesn’t heal up by then.

ATV travel and snowmobile travel is fine off road as it is 4×4’s as well. There is some drifting that is up to a foot deep but most of the ice has less than 6 inches of snow on it.

The guys bridged the crack crossing the south end of Bombeck today and that opened up most of the other flats we go to. We have roads to Weimer, Bombeck, the south 1/2 of Resort, Fishhouse, Fletcher and Eileen’s Point. They will try and move some houses over that crack tomorrow if all goes well.

Ice thickness ranged from 12″ under deeper snow to 16″ where the ice is bare(not very much of that). So 13″ to 14″ is a realistic average on the flats that we have measured closely(no estimates). We measure ice where no one has fished or driven, since you have to cross that open ice to get to the slushed up, beaten down areas where ice measures thicker.

The weather forecast is the next concern? That will be more accurate by morning. Right now all is good to go in every direction via any choice of travel.

After a day of rain, there is some areas that have 2-4 inches of water on them. Other areas are high and water free. All the roads are open as of now but with falling temps and snow falling as of now, that could change anytime. Be sure to check in at the office BEFORE venturing out. Waiting for daylight will be best to give the guys a chance to look things over in the early morning. The good thing about the rain is it knocked down all but a few drifts of snow on the lake. Travel cross-country is perfect for now, for all types of vehicles. So far, the ice work has gone very well for the crew with the smooth ice and very little snow being a big plus. We feel very lucky to have had this great start. Here is the forecast for tonight with another storm yet to be put into the warning for later tomorrow into Saturday:

Thankfully, the weatherman was off and we got less than 2 inches of snow the past couple days. So ice travel is still very good for all forms of vehicles. Big north winds today are making some drifting but there is more bare, hard surface than drifts. Drifting around the houses is now allowing good amounts of banking but also some minor flooding from the weight of the drifts.

Fishing reports are pretty good from many. Both from the flats as well as the deep shoreline houses. Of course, some are not doing well too.

A new crack has formed along shore that we have bridged with hopes the crack out on the Bombeck will now heal soon and the bridge can come off of that one. NEVER drive by a bridge! ALWAYS go over it and NOT around it.

Ice travel via any type of vehicle( 4×4 SUV/truck is preferred) is still fine with most of the lake surface hard, frozen left over slush from last weeks rain. The cold temps have the small drifts pretty hard as well. Cold temps have an active crack along shore as well as one running east/west about 2/3 of the way south on the Bombeck flat. Both are bridged. NEVER cross without using the bridge!

Fishing reports are spotty. Some being “real good”, some being “getting a few” and some “slow”. All levels of reports are coming from the flats and the inshore houses. Pattern? Whatever you choose! Deep sides of the flats and 22′ to 28′ along shore areas. One house reports great action during low light in 14ft!

Lake conditions continue to be good. Cross country travel is still fine with ATV’s, snowmobile or 4×4 Truck/SUV. Although big winds and an inch of snow this week has built some drifts, there isn’t any areas where things are tough to get around. We continue to have a bridge in place on the Bombeck flat if you intend to go out further than that,be aware. DO NOT go around a bridge on the ice anywhere, anytime.

Fishing reports are spotty. Good catches of a mix of perch, walleye and tullibees have come from all the various areas and depths as well as poor catches from the same areas. Hard to zero in on a pattern with what we hear and see. But there is action to be had.

The coming week will bring very cold temps so be prepared. It can be a mean place in sub-zero conditions if something goes wrong and you’re not prepared to stay warm and dry.

With no fresh snow, the trails are open but bumpy. The groomers have them as good as can be and very fast!

THANK YOU to everyone who has used our access and lodging for your home base!!

Still almost snow free ice for cross country ice travel via ANY type of 4×4 or ATV/snowmobile. Warming temps after a cold weekend shook and broke up the main ice crack pretty good the past couple days. Make sure you go over the bridge located on the SW side of Bombeck Flat if you are heading out to any flat south of Bombeck from our roads. All is fine to go south from there–road or no road.

Best perch action has been in the 28 to 30 ft. water out from Knox Point or to the east of our place as well. Not too many walleye reports but some are mixed in with the perch catching. Tullibee action in 32 to 35 ft. off the edges of most flats is great.

Be prepared for a blustery weekend the way it sounds!

Weekend cross country (off road) travel on the lake was and still is pretty good with 4×4 trucks and SUV’s as well as ATV’s and snowmobiles. 2 inches of fluffy snow and wind did create more drifting but still not enough to make off-road travel off limits. Even wheel houses are still traveling off-road with relative ease.

Fishing reports are spotty at best with best action coming from the deep shoreline areas–28′ to 30ft’. Keeper perch, in some cases good numbers, and a few walleyes mixed in are the norm. Our rentals landed some nice walleyes on a spot on one of the mudflats the past couple days.

The crack on the south end of the Bombeck flat is still open and active so be sure to use the bridge while venturing out to mid-lake mudflats.
