Last weekend my friend Jeff and I went up to MIlle lacs for our monthly Club tournament. We went up a day early to look around and do some practicing before it counted the next day. We stayed on the east side at Hunter’s, and the wind was really blowing in, so we went up to the north side to get in a few hours, but it isn’t where we intended to fish this our Outing.
Walleye, most deservedly so, get most of the attention this time of year, but we were after mainly Smallmouth Bass.
Our basic presentation is pretty much a straight lindy rig and medium to big minnow on rock reefs.
It did not take long before we were into some nice fish. Overall it was slow, but the quality was there, we did catch a few smaller fish, but most of these Smallies were over 5 pounds easy.
On one of Jeff’s big fish when it was hooked up and he was fighting it, Jeff said he say a follow fish, I picked up my rod and flipped out about an 8ft cast, and just held the rod, and picked the net backup and ready to net his fish. After a few moments, the follow fish crushed my rod, I dropped the net and fought my fish til it was under control, then I picked the net back up, netted Jeff’s fish, handed him the net and fish, so I could get two hands back on my rod. After an excellent battle, he netted mine. The first pic is of our honest double of 19 1/2 inch fish.
Yes that was awefully fun, and just a terrific day of big lake bassin’. Everyone of our big fish were just a blimp, extremely fat fish, these fish really know how to eat this time of year.
These fish are protected since the middle of Sept, so it is catch and release only for the rest of the year.
We did go out at night and tried for a few Walleyes, we got about a dozen, mostly eaters and short fish trolling stick baits in 6 to 9 feet.
Thanks Jeff for the Great weekend.
