Mille Lacs Saturday night.

What a great night to get back in the swing of things night trolling on Mille Lacs. Joel, Bob and I hit the lake about 6:30 last night to a great sunset shining on the east shore. We started out trolling right out of the landing and even before the sun had set had a perch, walleye and small mouth in the boat. Nothing big but a good start to the trip.

After trolling the shore for a while we finely made it to the first reef I wanted to check out. Spent maybe a couple of hours on this with one small walleye and a couple of misses. I was hoping as the moon rose the fish would come up on the reef to but by 10pm it wasnt happening and we needed to move.

Next we headed to a reef a few miles out on the lake. Before even getting the lines in the water we had noticed this reef was full of fish. First pass threw and running over lots of fish we only had one hit on a lure to show for it. With to many fish on the screen I decided to keep working this area and see what we could put together. About a hour into this we we had 2 rock bass in the boat and I was really starting to scratch my head.

About 11pm and many lure and presentation changes later the east wind picked up a little. That was it and the fish started hitting. Joel was on 1st with a nice little walleye. Then every pass after that it was a fish or 2 coming in. Bob and I even doubled up at one point. Nothing real big but nice sized fish most running just over 20″s. I did loose on real big one that hook up out in 20′ while turning the boat to get back on the reef. All in all by the time we pulled the plug around 1 am we had had hooked into about 15 nice walleyes and had lost many more.

Lures for the night where #7 red flicker shads and Tiger Roan suspending Rouge. I really think it was a night where more important than color was getting the baits in the right spot when the fish turned on. Speed was 1.5 to 2MPH. We got a few fish to hit up on top of the reef but getting those lures to pull off the reef in areas where we where marking lots of fish seemed to work pretty good to.

Last night was a great way to start fall trolling up on the lake. Brite moon, light winds and just enough fishing action to keep it entertaining. You couldnt ask for much more. If this was any indication to what the fall bite is going to be on Mille Lacs I think we are going to be in for a treat.

Good luck to you guys that are getting out.

A few more photos. That smallie in the last set was just over 19″s and was the last fish of the night. I have caught bigger smallies but nothing shaped like this. This thing was a diner plate. Our big walleyes for the night where a few between 24 and 26″s. Nothing real big but still great fish.

I had the dogs out to the park last night about 1AM and all I could think about was trolling on mille lacs at night. That big, bright moon and the calm winds about put me over the edge. Awesome report and pics.

That was fun Mr. Mike! It sure looked for a while like it was going to be just a nice boat ride; but then those fish turned on and BAM! We kind of left early (around 1:00) and the fish were still going. That smallie was the last fish of the night and it was a tank just under 20″ Thanks for the excellent Captaining sir!

You would have loved it James. We were even talking about you and your precision weed trolling. We were working rocks. I don’t have your kind of precision to work weeds until they die down a bit more.

Just wanted to add that cameras were forgotten
so Bob deserves kudos for having a cell phone that could take decent pics at night. Thanks Bob! My cell can’t even take decent pics under optimal conditions.

Sounds like a nice musky you guys had one jeff. What did it hit? I dont know if it was just time of night or the wind coming up that turned the fish on at 11pm. Just glad we stuck it out to be there when we did.

Im glad Bob had that camera phone to Joel. I new mine was in the truck it just happened to be in my other truck.

We were up Sat night as well and boy was it an awesome night. The action was slow for us. The weeds were thick and green but should lay down in a couple weeks. We did manage 4 hook ups in 6 to 9 feet of water. 2 came on shads and 2 came on HJ’s. The fish were all fat 20-23 inches. We lost 2 others during the course of the night. Pretty slow for such a great nt but not to be discouraged. Oct will be great this year.
1.9-2.4 – fish were haning near the rock to weed transition

My brother and I stayed at The Red Door this past weekend. We managed to catch 8 walleyes on Friday night with most fish in the 18-21 inch range. All of our fish came late after 11:30 PM when moon was directly overhead shallow in 6-8 FOW using Tenessee Shad Husky Jerks. Saturday was slow for us as well as we only caught 1 walleye pulling lead core w/cranks during day and 1 smaller walleye shallow during our night trolling. I think we might have talked to your group Wabasha as we were loading our boat up at the end of the night on Saturday. Fall colors were great and we were really impressed with the new cabins at The Red Door. Can’t wait for the October full moon!

Thanks for the reports guys. It was so nice saturday night we are headed back up tomorrow night. Looks like it will be interesting out with south winds picking up as the evening goes. Very tempting to go fish the north end as a nice breeze can get the fish going. Other wise we will hit the south again and play it safe.

Wabasha – Was good to meet you guys as well. I am expecting a great October bite on Mille Lacs and hope to get up there 3-4 times myself. We primarily fish weeds on West side and North end. Good luck on your trips also!
