So it finally happened. Getting married and having kids resulted in my annual father/son fall trip to Canada being replaced with a more local area where the kids can go along. I have only been ice fishing on the big pond so this will be new to me. Trip will be in Late August and I need time to “quietly” build up the necessary lures if you know what i mean

What are the best colors for spinners and color/model of cranks on the pond?

Also, I do not hear much of any reports on eyes over 28″. Is it a worthless cause to try to get my father into a large eye? And will I need to fish late at night to get into one?

That time of the year I am focusing on trolling leadcore on the mudflats. Pulling #5 & 7 raps hugging the bottom. Firetiger, parrot are my go to colors. There are lots of flats so spend some time graphing and working all over them. most ppl stick to the top edge but I have found them scattered asross the top, and suspended off the edge too so dont limit yourself. Also anchoring at night on the edges can be a good nite bite too with a leach or crawler.
Dont get me wrong fish are to be had everywhere but its a good numbers presentation. -Mark

If you’re looking for big fish, leave the spinners at home. If its calm and you don’t have lead core, a rig with a #8 or #10 hook and a 7-10 ft leader tipped with a big leech is an option on the mud. I have been fishing Mille Lacs for 30+ years. I have caught lots of big “eyes” over the years in late August. It sounds like your dad is my age.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is August is a good time to nail a 28+ “eye”. Now, I love fishing the mud, but I believe you need wind blowing into the shallow rocks. I’m talking 15-20mph, 2-4ft waves, anchor up wind from the marker. Your boat will be in about 3ft of water, cast a #5 or #7 perch colored shadrap. If the conditions are right and the ol’ boy don’t get beat up too bad, he might just nail a big one. Make sure you’re wearing life jackets.
    Rock n’ roll.

Late August is a good time to troll deep diving crankbaits out in the open basin for big walleyes via planerboards and leadcore. My late summer crankbaits consist of:

TDD11 Deep Tail Dancers – purpledescent, bleeding tiger and flash perch

Deep Thundersticks (original series and madflash) – Firetiger, Pearl Ghost, Tequila Glow, Chartreuse Silver

You can straight line these cranks or on planer boards anywhere from 100 – 150 feet back. I also fish them with leadcore to get down to 30-34 feet.
