The first 2010 open water report! We will be posting this each Thursday morning on our website throughout the open water season. This report is based on what we are seeing and hearing from the north shore anglers.
Opening weekend and all of this past week has been as calm and nice as Lake Mille Lacs can be. Warm, sunny, wind free days have warmed afternoon surface water temps to the low 60’s. The warmer water has created a bug hatch each day and evening, but not, to this point, very big. Will it get to normal, thick levels, soon? Who knows. But for now, the typical clouds of bugs are not around.
Fishing has been good for most anglers. Spotty at times. Limits for 2-3 anglers per boat, especially in the evenings, have been common. Keepers can be hard to find one day and then you run into a nice bunch of eaters. the next.
With the calm water, very few daytime catches have come from shallow water. Most fish are being taken, by all methods, either in 20-25ft. of water along the shorelines or from various mudflats. Most flats are holding some fish with some spots pretty thick with fish. Many are over the 18 inch mark. Fun fish! Leeches on slip sinker rigs are best on the flats with spinners and crawlers taking a few both along shore and on the flats. Crankbait anglers haven’t fared well yet in deep water.
THANK YOU to ALL of you have visited us during this first week! We look forward to being your Lake Mille Lacs host during the 2010 season, for sure. Be sure to call asap for your lodging needs as the cabins are filling fast.
