    May 20th

The first 2010 open water report! We will be posting this each Thursday morning on our website throughout the open water season. This report is based on what we are seeing and hearing from the north shore anglers.

Opening weekend and all of this past week has been as calm and nice as Lake Mille Lacs can be. Warm, sunny, wind free days have warmed afternoon surface water temps to the low 60’s. The warmer water has created a bug hatch each day and evening, but not, to this point, very big. Will it get to normal, thick levels, soon? Who knows. But for now, the typical clouds of bugs are not around.

Fishing has been good for most anglers. Spotty at times. Limits for 2-3 anglers per boat, especially in the evenings, have been common. Keepers can be hard to find one day and then you run into a nice bunch of eaters. the next.

With the calm water, very few daytime catches have come from shallow water. Most fish are being taken, by all methods, either in 20-25ft. of water along the shorelines or from various mudflats. Most flats are holding some fish with some spots pretty thick with fish. Many are over the 18 inch mark. Fun fish! Leeches on slip sinker rigs are best on the flats with spinners and crawlers taking a few both along shore and on the flats. Crankbait anglers haven’t fared well yet in deep water.

THANK YOU to ALL of you have visited us during this first week! We look forward to being your Lake Mille Lacs host during the 2010 season, for sure. Be sure to call asap for your lodging needs as the cabins are filling fast.

Quite an eventful 2nd weekend of the season!

First and foremost, a big THANK YOU to all of you who used The Red Door as home base this past weekend. We truly appreciate your loyalty and look forward to seeing you all, again, soon.

Fishing was pretty darn good according to the amount of remnants hauled out of the fish cleaning house during the weekend. Although the wind was out of control for a while mid day on Saturday, the southerly breeze created waves that had the walleyes pretty wild along some shoreline shelves. Both daytime and evenings, the bobber action was good for most. And the mudflats produced plenty of action as well for those that ventured out there.

Still no major bug hatch! They are still hatching but not in the thick amounts they can be, normally.

Again, THANK YOU for a great weekend at The Red Door!

This past weekend will be one of the best, “memorable” ones over the years, no doubt. The weather has been perfect and fishing reports are pretty consistently good.

Evening bobbering still has been very productive from 7 to 14ft. Mudflat daytime fishing has been producing as well. Lottsa smallies were caught this weekend as the 2010 bass opener took place. Our weekly Red Door webpage fishing report will offer more details–each Thursday.

A big THANK YOU to everyone for making The Red Door your home away from home this past week. We all truly appreciate your loyalty and look forward to seeing you all very soon!

And yet another great weekend on the northern shores of Lake Mille Lacs!

Nice fishing weather on Saturday led to everyone being happy with the results. Both daytime catches, from deeper water in the Carlsona area, the mudflats and the deep edge of the rocks off Knox Point as well as the evening shallow water catches were great for most on Saturday.

It slowed a little on Sunday until the wind came up mid day. Then the Knox Point rocks took off mid day in about 10-12 ft. for those that braved the rain and wind. The smallmouth anglers fished the rocks a little shallower with some big ones including a 21 1/2″ brute caught by one of our guests on Friday.

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone for making our place their home away from home again this past week! One group, who had been going to Big Winnie for 31 years and made their first Lake Mille Lacs trip this week are already making plans to return to The Red Door for their annual trip next year. We truly appreciate everyone’s loyalty to The Red Door! We appreciate the opportunity to be your hosts!

Watch for a more detailed fishing report on Thursday on our website.

Reports from our Red Door guests continue to be good on the walleye front. The fish cleaning house got quite a work out over this past weekend, for sure. Most of the action came from the mudflats, with spinners and crawlers taking more of the fish than any other method, from we hear.

THANK YOU to everyone for a great weekend at The Red Door! Watch for our detailed, online weekly report each Thursday on our website.

We’ve avoided most of the stormy weather the past few days and have seen fishing hold up pretty well. Spinners with crawlers seem to be the best on the mudflats, with more over 18″ in the mix than keepers this past week being reported.

THANK YOU to everyone for a great week at The Red Door! Be sure to watch for our weekly fishing report on our website, each Thursday. And don’t forget, the 19th Annual Red Door Walleye Tournament is coming up fast! July 10th and 11th. We expect a good number of boats entered!

Thanks for posting the results and congrats again to a successful tournament. If you don’t mind me asking, how many fish over the 28 inch slot were weighed in over the 2 day tourney?

In the old days, we’re told this period was called the “dog days”. What does that mean? The old-timers that coined that label are gone, so who knows! With that, the link below will give you our weekly fishing report.

Hey Red Door, a close buddy of mine stuck a 57″, 47LB muskie 2 weeks back up close to your neck of the woods on the Pond.

That one is going on the wall. Can’t wait to see it!
