Well I don’t have to tell anyone we had a big artic high pressure system around do I? Patterning the fish during these systems can be difficult.
As far as ice conditions out on the lake, our guide team has been able to go where ever we wanted this past week. Every resort has roads out to gravel, rocks and mud flats. And driving off road has not been a problem. We have seen this week some cracking and heaving of the ice with this very cold weather. When she warms up this weekend, I’m sure we will see more ice movement. Just make sure to check in with the resort you are going out of for current road/ice updates. We have been seeing around 18-22 inches.
We have noticed that during this high pressure system the windows of aggressive feedings have been shorter. One day you catch alot of aggressive fish in the morning, only to return to the spot in the late afternoon to find very negative fish. The next day just the opposite or just a few fish one day in the morning and evenings, but a flury of catching around noon. The other thing we have noticed is gold colored spoons have been working the best. But when you find fish, espescially negative fish, don’t be afraid to open the tackle box and start switching colors of spoons. We had a client this week who switched to an orange/white back spoon and starting catching all those negative fish.
The weather is suppose to warm up starting this weekend. Come on up and fish. Until next time…we will see you on the ice!
