A body of a male was found on the morning of Saturday, June 20, in Garrison Bay on Mille Lacs Lake by two men searching weeds for lost lures.
Shortly before 11 a.m. Mille Lacs and Crow Wing County Sheriff’s offices responded to a report of the body in a weed bed east of Highway 169 just south of Garrison McDonald’s and north of the South Garrison public access.
The body is presumed to be that of Mike Hedin, 59 of Maple Grove who went missing last fall after a late afternoon fishing trip. His empty boat was found on the north shore of Mille Lacs. Carol Hedin, the wife of the missing angler, contacted the Messenger with the report that the body found this morning was that of her husband.
“He had his wedding ring on and another ring with an “H” on it,” Carol said. “He also had his watch.”
The body was found fully clothed including his boots.
“It’s him,” Carol said.
Positive identification will include DNA testing.
Carol and the family are relieved to have found closure. They gathered on the shores of Mille Lacs Lake to honor his memory. Carol has been making nearly daily trips to the lake in hopes his body would be found. Her prayers have been answered, she said.
