Challenging weather and bug hatches yesterday, but managed 14 smallies up to 21.25″. All pre-spawn out on reefs; not much going on around the typical spawning flats near shore. X-Raps and grubs. Very fat, healthy fish with no visible wear from hooks or bed fanning. Few fish coughed up 3-4″ perch.
Quick soap box speech – smallie fishers can find active, feeding, hard-fighting fish out on reefs throughout the spawning period that typically runs late-May and June. Plenty of fish do not spawn each year. I encourage my fellow anglers to work that pattern during the spawn and resist the urge to drag fish off beds with plastics and leeches.
