Just curious if anyone has made it out to the mud yet? I was planning on heading up this weekend, and would like to start there if the ice is safe. I haven’t spent enough time in the winter anywhere else to have much confidence.

    Thanks.

Well Goldpig, I have not heard of anyone getting out that far yet. The ice conditions have been improving on Mille Lacs. But for anyone to tell you that it would be safe to make the run to the flats would be difficult. A week ago Wednesday a large area broke open on the Northeast side of Mille Lacs. This area ran from out in front of Lakeside north and west to Myr-Mar. This area did freeze over again late last week and had only 3 inches on it Saturday. I have not been out and checked this area my self, but I know other areas have only increased around 1-1/2 inches sence Saturday. That would leave maybe 4+ in that newly frozen areas.

If you are thinking of running out into the middle of the lake. You better check your path and watch for thin ice…. We need some cold weather to freeze up these bad areas. The forecast is for mild temps this weekend…………not what we need.

Bob hit the nail on the head. I saw open areas on Saturday that were’t open on last Wed and areas that were open on last Wednesday that had 3″ of ice on Saturday. I tried to get out further yesterday to only be greeted with an area of open water. The ice is still shifting a little. Wherever you end up going, check your path unless you see it has been previously traveled.

As of the 19th I made it out to the mud with safe ice everywhere I traveled by ATV. There are many ridges and cracks out there to meander around. Bring the planks and a chisel with and you will be able to get anywhere you want to go. Make sure to look for safe spots to cross ridges and check you path as you go. The ice is shifting around with warm and cold temps and changing wind directions.
