coming from the Messenger. Did anyone think for even a second that anyone would be held accountable? Somethings never change!

What a huge shock. I can’t hardly believe that. yeah yeah yeah. I figured that was the case.
ted-merdanPosts: 1036January 21, 2009 at 8:39 pm #739940well i got to take there side on this! I guess if they were my nets it wouldnt make any sense to just leave them out on the ice and lose my investment!(the nets) I have to believe that efforts to retrieve the nets were made! I guess if getting to the nets put my life a danger! well !@#@! the nets!
the way i understood this story when it happen! nets were put out and weather and ice shifts made it difficult to get to or even find the nets! some times things happen that are just out of our control!~ mother nature will always win!
I dont think fines were the right course of action!@ or deserved!
January 21, 2009 at 9:04 pm #739947You can’t legislate against stupid! And making criminals out of idiots makes no sense either. (These guys just needed a weather forcast. We all saw this coming.)
Very easy change here. New Rule – No netting until ice completely off lake. Problem solved.

They knew well in advance because the weather forecast was for strong winds from the east days in advance. What do they do? They put their nets on the west side and the wind blew the ice over to the west side. Duh!
January 21, 2009 at 10:32 pm #740001Ya what a shock They dont pay for anything else so you cant expect them to pay a fine to
January 21, 2009 at 10:33 pm #740002I found a net off of Big Point last year. I really don’t think they know how many nets are out there! Until someone gets hurt or killed, then things will be enforced. Remember, according to the tribes, its a sovrieng nation.
January 21, 2009 at 11:18 pm #740026Hey guys I wouldnt get Kooty worked up about tribal netting this early in the year
wolfman-kPosts: 91January 22, 2009 at 7:18 am #740202Geez, it only took them from last Spring until November to come up with that excuse? Plus not making the Messenger until January? Wow, no fines! I’m shocked, Not!!!!
Go get em Kooty!January 22, 2009 at 12:42 pm #740213Look at the bright side. With all of the nets they still have floating around. Maybe they wont need to set as many this spring.
January 22, 2009 at 8:45 pm #740410Sadly, we all knew this was coming. The lack of backbone by our state and federal representatives to address this issue is maddening to say the least. No matter who I’ve written on this subject, the finger always points to someone else. I’m frustrated, but not done.
I plan to attend these “ceremonies” this spring with video camera in hand. The more videos of this we can get out to anyone outside of MN, the better our odds of finally tweaking someone who has the backbone to urge our president to recind this stupid treaty and sovereign nation BS. I can guarantee you it won’t be from our current prez tho. In reality he has much bigger “fish” to fry.
Oh well, see you all in the spring on this subject. In the mean time, I’ll continue to write to everyone involved.
January 23, 2009 at 12:57 am #740489No one, GOP or DFL, has or will do anything. The DFL get to much $$$ and votes to do anything and the GOP draws the same (votes more than $$ IMHO) in backlash. Look at history. Sondra Erickson & Betsy Wergin talked and squawked but neither brought forth or led an effort to have GWB rescind the treaty. The same can be said for any GOP elected official to the best of my knowledge.
No doubt a DFLer wouldn’t.
I agree that Obama has bigger fish to fry. I’m worried big time about the economy.
Now for if McCain had won; Absolutely NO CHANCE. Sen. McCain has been a consistant sponsor of legislation expanding treaty rights / soveriegn nation status. He carries Indian Country big time in Az elections.
The facts are there. We just get screwed.January 23, 2009 at 2:16 am #740507I would love to put up a big tent at the public access and throw a big party while they are netting but I dont think I want to spend the opener in Jail
January 23, 2009 at 4:51 pm #740709I will not be disrespectful to the Indians that are netting and monopolizing the accesses. However, I do expect the same respect in return. My wife is really not happy with me about this. She is very fearful that there could be retaliation for making a stink. I’ve shown her the proper end of a 12 gauge….
January 23, 2009 at 7:19 pm #740763It just irritates me to see them set up camp on a public access that my tax dollars pay for right next to a no camping sign Thats all I got to say on this for now as in a couple months this will be another lengthy conversation
