What a great day on the pond. After fighting the “ice” roads to get to the lake, we (Double C’s and I) were to 9 mile around 7 am. After drilling a bunch of holes, only to find almost all of them full of fluttery yellow lines (baitfish) and only landing 3 small fish by 9:30, we decided to make a move.
The spot that we moved to is a location we fish alot in the winter. It’s an area of very soft and very hard mud with very little contour. We’ve spent countless hours in the summer with sonar and cameras as well as winter with the flashers and cameras to find the exact transiton lines from hard to soft. It’s mud and it’s 26′ to 28′ and it’s very lonely, we hope to keep it that way. Sorry.
After burning holes, we were set up and fishing around 10:30. From then till 4:30 it was steady to crazy. We landed between 50 and 60 walleyes with the majority being between 8″ and 12″. Only one “to big” today and it stretched the tape to 25″. We kept 8 for the pan that were 14″+ to 16″. This is normally a good jumbo spot too but none were landed today.
The lure of choice (again) was the buckshot rattle spoon (perch and glow) tipped with a fathead or crappie head. About 90% of the fish were caught with the buckshot with the deadstick taking care of the rest. The dead stick was just a #6 red Gammy tipped with a fatty set about 2′ off the bottom. When the fish turned on, we caught them as high as 8′ off the bottom (jigging).
We found very little rough ice and no heaves/breaks on our way to 9 mile (from the casino landing). There were wheelers on 9 and even some trucks on 7 that we saw as we were traveling. There was about 14″ of ice in the areas that we fished and it was very clear/solid. Not much slush and the spots that were slushy, were very managable. The lake is in great shape!! The casino landing is not plowed and is tough to get around in with a trailer, get up a good head of steam when heading out of it or you’ll be mired in….Chad put about 20,000 miles on his truck (spinning) to get out.
Sorry about the poor picture, we were in a hurry to get unloaded after staying at Hucklebucks to long…..
