I had one of my personal best nights of fishing again this fall with Mr. Holst. I happened to run into James and Dustin for a some fine wine and dinner before our outing, OK, it was at McDonalds. Always good visiting with you guys!!

We put the boat in the water around 6:30. James called the first fish about like calling a home run. Mike boated the first and the biggest fish of the night, at least for walleyes. I was lucky enough to wrassle with a couple pike in the 36 inch range along with numerous walleyes that taped over 23 inches.

We boated over 40 eyes and 8 pike for the night. I’ll post some pics of the nicest fish we were able to get. These fish are pulling so hard, it’s amazing. I got one 23 inch fish that we were sure it was pike by the runs it was making, easily puling 20 feet off the line counter in couple of it’s runs. When your arm hurts the next day from fighting fish, it’s a good thing!!!

    Travis,

We fished the west side of the lake. Read James reports for more details, but any bay on the west side with some weeds is likely holding fish right now. Watch for the gulls right before dark, if they are feeding there, you’ll find the fish shortly after that. There wasn’t another boat on the lake after Dustin left at 2am. OK, maybe not on the whole lake cuz I know Tuck was out that night too. We only saw one boat all night, and it was Dustin. The landings on the west side were very vacant. All I can say for baits is #12 HJ’s, going slow.

Good luck, post a report when you get back!!

Thanks for the reports. I love reading them here at work.

What is the speed that you or anyone else is keying in on to have the most success?

    Thanks,

    Alphid,

I have been having my best success lately at slow speeds in the 1.0-1.2mph. About a week ago, we had a better bite going at 1.6-1.8mph. Plenty of S-turns. For me when the bite has its slow periods throughout the night, I tend to work my confidence spot over thoroughly before picking up and moving to the next area. It seems every spot has a spot within a spot that the walleyes are keying on in that particular area and I find myself working it with more concentration or confidence than I do other areas at times.

    Thanks for the response.
My best luck has been coming in the 1.5-1.8 mph but nice to know that the slower speeds are starting to pick up.

1.5 MPH has been a good starting point for me. And large, wide sweeping turns too.

Wait until you guys see the pic of the sumo-pike we caught Wednesday night.. on a handline! Long story that I save for the report…lol

Thanks for the info guys. We had a decent night out there. Got quite a few fish, but no real pigs… the biggest was 25 1/2″. The fish were there all night, it was just a matter of changing colors every few passes. I did get another musky… a 44-45″ “humpback”. I’ll post the pics when I get a chance.
