The water temperature has dropped to 60 degrees as of this morning. I found that our harbor temp. is now lower than the main lake at 57 deg’s…….a sure sign of fall and winter in my mind!!!

Yep… she was a chilly one last night! Temps were 62 degrees on the SW side. Got out there ’round 11. The bite was good for 1 1/2 hours… managed a number of fish in 9-10′ range on a rouge I had painted myself .
As Bobber said, switching colors was key, along with trying different depths. Things slowed for a bit… but we still managed fish. They completely shutdown for an hour… but at 4:30… they were ON. It was awesome. Clown was the top color, with a chroome rouge coming in a close second. The depths were 6-7′ on the windward side. I was wishing the sun wouldn’t come up! We ended up with another 25+ fish night, with the 2 biggest at 27 1/2″ & 29″. LOTS of fat 25-26 inchers. Add in 2 (yes 2) muskies (36″ and low 40 lost at the boat), and a VERY FAT 38″ northern… it was a great night again. Sorry… no pics. I had the digital, but left the memory chip at home hooked into the computer. Figures.

I had 60 degrees also on Sat morning…..Burrrrr cold nite! It was 30 in Aitkin for the morning temp. Lake was up to 61.7 when I got off the water Sunday AM.

I still have not got anything dialed in Fish here and there with a couple of keepers. As Bobber mentioned, the early AM bite, say 3:30-4:00am till sun up has been the best bite on the east side from the guys I talked to. Good mix of slots and big fish.

Time to start moving around the lake to see what else is going. Anyone been up on the northside?

I had designated Saturday night as a night to investigate new ground that I have not fished for quite some time. We concentrated our efforts on shallow to mid depth rock reefs. One fish here and one fish there was the story of the night for us. I am glad I took the time however to investigate these new areas, some look very promising as the water begins to cool down for us this fall and others that did not look fishy at all for what I was looking for.

This weekend will be another “eliminating or gathering” water weekend for me. I see mid 50’s for the highs the next couple days up there!

Question for all the Mille Lacs gurus on the water temp. Just curious to know why you are so concerned with the Fall water temp? Are you looking for a drop to certain temp? Is it the fact that it is dropping? Furthermore, how does the water temp affect your pre-trip planning? And, lastly is there certain crankbait colors to focus on based on a certain water temp?

I guess for me, as long as the water temp is above 32 that means I can still get a boat in!! lol. Seriously, I only get concerned when the water temp is starting to drop into the 40’s and the whitefish get in the rocks so thick you can’t troll.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jon J.

I like to see the temp’s get in the mid 50’s……I think the walleye tend to feed more at that time. With the cold wind we have had today 30mph steady………the water temp should be really dropping? Oh by the way, I’m not going on the lake tonite…just a bit too windy for this fisherman.

Actually. 50 degrees is when Bob stops skinny dipping the pond..

Bob.. Can you get a slip bobber out far enough from that dock? You could probably fill out tonite

Bobber… I always appreciate it when you post current event pics from Mille Lacs. Everything from ice conditions, to bug conditions, to that shot of the waves crashing in. I can’t get up to Mille Lacs as much as I’d like but it is always fun to know (and see) what is going on.

Maybe James should put a camera on the peak of my roof and we can have a live link to in-depthangling direct from my house!!!!!!!!

    That would be cool!!!!!

And thanks for the comments also……..

There was talk of having one at Everts ramp down on the river. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.

yep it would be, that way we could see bobbers secret lure stash in his boat and what he uses to catch them big fish. I get a report from family that lives up there on the lake almost every week. but they have been pretty tight liped so far this last few weeks.
