What a Day

    What a Day!

I gave the nite trolling a fair shot on Friday. Lasted till 3am with little to show for my efforts. Hard to get things dialed in with only one line in the water. Still an enjoyable evening. No pigs for my boat, but did take one 14 incher for breakfast!

The daytime bite kept me busy however! What a day to enjoy for me. I had pretty steady action on the jumbo, and I mean jumbo perch and slot walleyes. The perch were running upwards of 12 inches with a brute 14 and a dozen more in the 10-11 inch range.

The pattern for me was trolling shallow rock on the east and south end of the lake. Rock humps that topped out at 5-6 feet surrounded by 10-12 feet were productive. Tick the tops of the rocks with a #5 shad rap and BANG, fish on. Craw and Firetiger put fish in the boat.

Let’s just say that I decided to get a good nights sleep on Saturday and did it again on Sunday.

Ok, here is a question for everyone…..

Where in the heck did all of these perch go and hide last year?

I spend a fair amount of time pulling crawlers/spinners and on any given day will catch a handful of perch. Not last year….not even once! Not on spinners, bobbering or cranking!!

Now we have a great supply of eater size perch with what appears to be a GaZillion little peckers in the 2-4 inch range everywhere. I am truly puzzled. I was certain there was something seriously out of whack with the lake.

    I guess that’s mother nature for ya…

A friend of mine caught a bunch of those perch last week on Big Point. He had 28 jumbo perch in a 5 gal. bucket that weighed in at 22 lbs. There are some nice perch coming in right now.

Did you see any muskies on the shallow rocks?

James and I stopped by Saturday early afternoon. We saw your truck down at the wharf, we were hoping to share some stories…….and have a cold one!

Did you say Big Point? I think there are a few spots where a couple guys with live bait could fill a bucket pretty quick!

I did not see any Musky in the rocks….was not rerally looking for them. Interesting post you had there up the shore. I heard the nite bite for slots was better up your way too! I know a couple guys who fish Musky exclusively at nite this time of year…. Did not get a report….they are funny like that..kind of like Cat fishing guys

My weekend was split up fishin/workin/and taking care of the honey. I think I have completed my last project at the camp site. The deck is done!! Here is what to look for if you stop by the back lot… Notice cooler on deck always has beer….cheap beer (Strohs), but that’s what I like. Stop over anytime.

Man… those are some nice looking perch Jon! You didn’t miss much Saturday night (at least until 4 AM). It was a tough night getting them dialed in. Managed 1 here, one there sort of thing. Finally figured out what they were after, and then it was on. We only managed 3 fish from 11-4, they just didn’t want longer stick baits. Switched over to jionted #5… and we ended up catching 18 in the last hour and a half. No slots, everything went 20-26″. Attached is a pic of the biggest, landed by my brother.

I have had nights like that were nothing much was going, then a big flurry of action. Sticking it out has it’s rewards! Wish I had the other seat filled, another line out would have been a big plus.

I think I prefer the last picture from your spot on big point….the one w/ the big tree in the middle of your camper! This one is a little too domestic.

It has taken me a while (haven’t been in front of a computer in a couple days), but I have a bit of a report from Saturday night as well. Numbers were low but we did boat a walleye here and there all night. We left the lake at 3:00 AM (had to drive back to the Cities) so we missed what appears to be the hot hour… figures! We did boat a 27″ and a 29″ though and it was fun to see a couple big fish. We also had one slot fish, a few dinks, and the rest were in the low 20’s. These fish came on a variety of baits and colors so I can’t say one outshined the others. Interestingly, the 29″ came on the smallest bait used all night… a small suspending Yozuri.

The rock bass were out in force… causing several “buzz kills”. There were also a couple nice smallies, the biggest of which was lost at the boat when it became apparent a neighboring boat had managed to get his lure mixed up with mine after or during a couple jumps from the smallie. It is tough to boat a fish when someone else is pulling your line the other way .

There was more boat traffic than I expected. I was expecting a near empty ramp and an empty lake but there were quite a few boats out.
