My brother and I went out Saturday about 8, launched from Indian point’s public access and covered about 4 major rock bars on the southwest and south central side. Action was not hot and heavy initially. Ended up getting a couple on spinner bait and cranks earlier though. Caught the fish in about 5-7 feet of water. But while the action wasn’t constant all day, we managed into some decent smallies mostly utilizing 3 inch flipping tubes on lightwire tube jig hooks later on. Colors ranged from black/red sparkle, grey/red sparkle and pumpkin seed. We noticed a lot of rubs on heads of the smallies we caught earlier and figured that the fish were nosing into rocks looking for craws. we have seen numerous crawfish on mille lacs and have noted that they mostly had a brownish red coloration to them this year and being about 3 inches. We fish the tubes by just letting them get lodged in some of the bigger boulders we saw and popped them free. bites came almost immediately when casting near big boulders or after the initial pop. Some dandies were caught as well. A few 4 pounders and a 21″+ fish straightened my brother’s hook out right boat side, dang it! I believe these fish were/are cruising pretty good as we would run into a mess of them all over and seeing them. The key for us was to find areas that had rocks all over as oppose to areas with sand and rocks, held the majority of fish.
saw two 45 + inch muskie and a bunch of walleyes cruising along the reef, I thought my fellow night fisherman would like to know that.
Water temps were 69 in the morning and got to 71 around afternoon.
Have fun out there, will be trying to get out there again soon!
