As soon the leaves start turning, I like to head to the bays and harbors in search of Mille lacs Crappies. This time of year can bring in some of the biggest brutes in the lake. Some days the bite is only in the mornings, other days it’s an evening bite. They wont stay too long during this period and it’s important to practice catch and release because there are so few trophy Crappies in Mille lacs. Mille lacs Crappies, especially the larger fish can be very shy and may need a lot of coaxing. Small Crappie minnows and small bobbers can trigger these fish into biting. Ice jigs and wax worms can work as well.
Keep this bite in mind when you’re out chasing Walleyes this fall, if the big lake is too windy, head for the weedy bays. If the Crappies aren’t’ in, you can bet to find some Jumbo Perch willing to bite.
