What type of Markers/Paints?

Just wondering what type of markers/paints guys use to modify the lures like the lure shown in the “Mille Lacs September full moon by Mike W” report. I’ve put squiggles in black on the sides of some baits but would like to get a little more advanced this year.

Mainly because I can’t find the burnt orange, and red colors in the Husky Jerks, and the Rattlin Rogues.

    Thanks, Ryan

The Orange Craw HJ’s are a nearly impossible find. They’ve been a non-stock pattern for some years now.

The Rattlin’ Suspending Super Rogue is a standard pattern readily available at most bait shops (ganders and sportsman’s warehouse) or online.

As for pens and paints… a couple black sharpies, one with a fine point tip and the other with a wide “wedge” tip will cover you for mods with black.

For other colors, go to any hobby or craft store and pick up liquid paint pens in the color(s) of choice. They work great and dry quickly.

Rumor has it they work on plastics also. I see if Joe will chime in here with what he uses to paint his lures. I think its the detail in the eyes of the lure that attracted the fish.

This lure that Mike has up here is a #12 Husky Jerk. It has been custom painted in this manner: 2 coats of AutoAir white base, 2 coats of gloss white AutoAir for the full body. The orange on the head is Candy Apple Opaque Orange/2 coats. All coats of AutoAir paint are airbrushed. The eyes are hand painted with Sharpie pens actually. After all of this is completed, there are two coats of Duracryl DCA468 Acrylic Lacquer applied w/airbrush, and baked in a special AutoAir oven at 200 degrees for 25 minutes, this is to harden the clear coat Acrylic Lacquer. There is a day between each coat of AutoAir to assure dryness, and 2 days between clear coats. Add hooks and split rings and they are good to go…There are two answers to the next question, one is “no I don’t”, and yes, they catch fish.

I do have some of the HJ-12 OCW’s in my collection of discontinued lures that are available.

I posted this for informational purposes only, as a favor to Mike W.

You can also get a taxidermy supply book. Order up an air brush and and the paint colors are limitless! Fairly reasonable cost considering the paint will last a very long time if you are only painting lures.

if you use sharpies to paint the entire lure do a small piece at a time to see what co;or that it turns the bait. It is normaly not the same color as the marker, Iam guessing you probaly have to paint them white first to acheive that.

That’s exactly why I don’t suggest sharpies for anything other than black. The liquid paint pens certainly don’t do the quality work that an airbrush will produce but in a pinch they allow an angler to make needed adjustments or just experiment while accurately reproducing the intended colors.

Nice looking lures Joe. Just remember theres a new rule in my boat now. No use of lures that there are not at least 2 of or that can not be reproduced with the markers at hand.

Wow! Lots of information. I wound up picking up some “Painters Paint Markers” in about 5 different colors. I went with an orange, red, dark green, and 2 blacks.

I applied a base coat to 2 different lures that I wasn’t fond of the color scheme last night. I did one in the orange, and one in the red. I would not say that they are super quick drying. They had dried by morning, and I was pretty happy with the results.

Air brushing them and putting clear coat lacquers sounds pretty cool and would give you a much more professional looking product.

Thanks for all the information. I’ll try to post a picture of how some of my attempts turn out. I’m just mainly trying to get some of the darker colored baits that work well in the low light or no moon conditions.

So far I only found 3 of the Lazer Craw from Smithwick. I bought all 3 when I finally found some.
