Is there a place I can get a good map of Mille Lacs off the ‘net. I’m a cheap [censored] so if it’s free it’s for me! I’m mostly looking for the west and south/southwest areas of the lake. A map marking reefs and bars and such would be terrific.

Sorry Ecnook, don’t take this as a rip! But that map and the other one that goes with it are the 2 worst maps of Mille Lacs out there!! No one should be allowed to use them….well, unless you just want to know where the ramp is. The DNR map in the link is older than color T.V. !

Drop the $15 and get a Whiffer. It’s a very good map. As far as free goes, well, you usually get what you pay for. In this instance, not paying for a good map gets you beached on a reef in 4 footers.

    Thanks everyone!

I think I can swing the $15. I’m not that cheap. I just didn’t want to join some website to get maps and pay for over-hyped garbage. I’ll just get a Whiffer one when I’m up there.

I suggest you guys get the Reel bottom map. They are expensive, but nuts on accurate. I have not been on the lake with mine, but my buddies swear they are ten times the whiffer maps. You can buy sections of the lake. One side is zoomed into that section, the other is the whole lake in a larger scale. I think they run in the $22.00 per range.

The Reel bottom maps are maps are add-ons for certain GPS units, yes? Not paper maps, right? If so, the Reel Bottoms aren’t available for Garmin, which I have.

Most all Cabelas and Ganders will carry the whiffer for Mille Lacs.

They do have paper versions of the Reel Bottom as well. One side has the whole lake and the other has a zoomed in portion of the lake. I believe there are 3 or 4 versions depending on the zoomed in area you want.

Actually they do exist, you can pick up the Reel Bottom paper versions of all the ones available on MMC cards. Of course, I last saw them at Gander. You can check them out at http://www.lakemap.com Click on the paper maps link.

As for compatibility, you are right, Garmin isn’t compatible to the best of my knowledge. They want you to run the Hot Spots version they sell. I heard some of the Garmins may be compatible with the Navionics chips, but not sure which one. I’m guessing the very high end of their sonar line possibly??

    James,
What do you need a map for, you never get more than a mile from shore. You just line up the water tower, casino lights to the gas station lights thing don’t you? LOL J/K

There are paper versions of the Reel Bottom map. I like them better than the whiffer maps because the whiffer maps do not say exactly where on the structure their GPS points are and they only take them two digits past the decimal. The Reel Bottom paper maps can be a bit of information overload but they are nice. The other negative is that you have to buy 4 maps if you want up close detail of the entire lake, complete with GPS points. Each map has a map of the entire lake on one side and a smaller portion with GPS points on the other.

Comparing the whiffer to the Reel Bottom map, I am amazed at how acurate the tops of the structure are on the the whiffer map. Having both, I can say I do use the Reel Bottom paper version more than the Whiffer but the Whiffer is a very good map.
