An hour here and there

This weekend was primarily a family trip, but who can resist sneaking a few fishing trips in.

Friday we made it out for 2 hours at about 10am to our good spot from the week before. We managed a 17″ smallie each. Was glad to get Cherice to hook into one. The kids started squeaking so off to tubing we went.

Friday evening I dropped the kids at the dock and headed for one of my favorite spots for a couple of casts prior to pulling the boat. I was welcomed by several bass sitting on top of the rocks in the still water. I pitched my Fluke in and saw the 17″er drop down after it. There is no better feeling than watching your line run across the water, pulled the slack and bang. That was the start of the run, 4 fish 6 casts. 17″, 16″, 18″, 19.5″. Headed back in, grabbed the boy and went back out for 2 more 16″ers before the wind came up. Had to head in for suppper anyway. Very fun!

Last trip was on Sun. with my Dad and son Jack. My Dad wondered who could catch more on a windy day. Him with tubes or me with Flukes. I’ve got the Fluke thing down fairly well, but it’s always been calm. Tough to pitch weightless rigs in the wind.

So out we went in the wind and I headed for the hot spot from Friday. I experimented a little however, embedding a piece of a lead into the head of the Fluke allowing it to sink. The strategy paid off and I caught 3 small ones about 12″ or 13″. My Dad switched over and second cast he got the a bigger 16″ or 17″ if I recall.

Next time I’ll let Dad drive, his tube jigging tends to work better in the wind. He is also better able to float over the rocks pitching into good spots. I’m just not ready to float over the rocks with the lake down as it is. So there is still more testing to be done.

There had to be some good outings out there. Anyone else?

Went out this morning for a couple hours on the SE end. Didn’t have the luck I had on the west side last weekend but caught a 19″, 15″, and and a ~17″ spit my tube at me next to the boat. Actually hit me, Son of A B….

Was a little rough out there and made it hard to stay on the spot on a spot.

Great report Brad! Sounds like you got a couple of honey holes figured out! And good job getting the wife into the action. That always helps for future outings…

Let me know the next time you are going to be up there. Maybe we can do a combo trip – pull some cranks for eyes in the open basin in my warrior and then jump in your new Reata for some smallie fishin! And this time BRING YOUR DAD! From the sounds of it, I know I could learn a few tricks from him!

    Anyone catching any smallies lately?

I didn’t have much luck the last time I was out. It was just when things started to cool off and attributed it to the cold front.?. It was a bit windy also, and I seem to have better luck on calm days.
