Making your own crawler harnesses

Anybody lend any help in how to make a 3-hook harness? I’ve had terrible luck with my store-bought 3-hook harnesses. The only long ones I can find (6-9 footers) seems to have terrible hooks or break easily. I’ve been pretty unhappy with them, so I’d like to start making my own.

Any help anybody could lend on the technique for putting them together would be very helpful!

I make all my own harnesses for spinners. There is a certain way to tie the hooks so you can put multiple ones on the same line. It would be too long to try to type in a post. You wrap the hook and feed line through the eye. I know there are demo’s available out on the internet. It seems like most guys use 10 lb or thicker line. I use 8 pound flourocarbon and it seems to work well. For Mille Lacs, I usually use 8-9 foot snells.

Oh, and for crawlers I usually just use two hooks, not three. I haven’t felt I have missed fish due to one less hook. I typically put a smaller hook on the lowest location. #8 low and #6 or sometimes #4 higher, spaced about 4 inches apart.

I use a hook w/ either an up or a down eye and use a uni-knot.

there is an easy aussie snell that is easy to tie and a uni one isn’t too bad and stays a bit tighter. The easy one doesn’t stay as nice and tight. Really they aren’t that hard to tie but you have to learn how to get the hook spacing while tying.

If you get to the Brooklyn Center area stop by my office and I will show you a great way to snell several hooks on a line. Use True Turn bait holder hooks as they are excellent for crawler rigs.
