Smokers on the lake

Ban smoking on the lake as in the bars and restaurants starting in October like the rest of the state. I have spent many, many hours on the lake and very rarely do I see anyone use a butt can. As a cabin owner I can’t tell you how many are washed up on shore daily. Any thoughts on this?

I personally don’t smoke, but I feel if you need a smoke or a stogie on the water you should be able to do so. As for throwing bebris in the lake, I think there is a law in place for littering, I just don’t know about the ability to enforce that if we are already short on CO’s. We can make laws all day long but if we don’t have enough people to enforce them it just seems kind crazy to me. I feel your pain for picking up butts, cans, trash ect. and thank you for doing so.

How about the hypocritical act of a person throwing a butt

out the window on the interstate having a “Pheasants Forever”

    sticker on their topper window?

C’mon smokers take some responsibility for your by-products.

(That doesn’t mean emptying your ash tray

at the stop light so you don’t have to chuck them out the

    window)!!!!!!

When on the water use a pop or beer can as a receptacle.

    How tough is that??

I beleive there was a law passed a year or so ago. I carry one of those butt trays they sell at gas stations. The smokers that I have in my boat have been happy to use it.

I smoke occasionally and heres what i do and i feel that others can do it to. Years ago while wading a local creek i came upon a logjam filled with trash that had floated down and got caught in the logs. Seeing this site really made me think that if people were a little more concious of what and where they throw thier trash we wouldn’t see this. While smoking i thought what am i going to do with the filter and thats when i started pinching off the filter and simply putting it in my left front pocket of my jeans. Its easy to do and just empty it when near a trashcan. Its a bad and unhealthy habit for a heavier smoker and anyone thats on the water ought to use an ash tray or simply pinch the filter and put it somewhere. It is litter and it takes a very long time for the filters to eventually breakdown so anyone that does smoke, do yourself and others a favor, just pinch the filter and throw it on the bottom of the boat, ashtray or like i do and just simply put it in your pocket, its not hard to do and it does make you feel good knowing your not the ones making it look bad. This may sound arrogant to some but i do it and so can you.

It’s always been against the law to litter. However in 2002 as part of the “Conceal and Carry” legislation the law was specifically amended to state “Water” in the language for cigarettes. (Sec 9. Minnesota Statues 2002, section 85.20, subdivision 6) Prior to that it was specific to littering cigarettes out of a car window. It includes higher fines for both. Note that it includes all litter, cigarette filters and even fireworks debris.

But as stated above, no law is a good law if it is not enforced or even enforceable! Wouldn’t it be nice if you could call 911 and report the license plate or boat registration of violators and actually get a response? Not going to happen.

    I agree with mossydan 100%….
I’ve been doing this(pinching the filter) for over 20 years now…
I do NOT throw butts on the ground anywhere, golf courses, lakes, out the window of a car(in fact if your a passenger and do that in my car..you get bitched at),NOWHERE……period.
It’s easy and the right thing to do!!!

I do not smoke anymore, but this is how you do it in the military. Filter in your pocket. Just get caught once, throwing em on the ground, a drill sargeant will cure you !!!

This old DI once had a whole platoon picking up butts. If I was in a mood I would “find a couple” after they had passed. Usually they came from my own pocket. No butts were found after that. I strip them and throw into the bottom of my rig. Shopvac them out after a night. Banning stuff is unamerican.

My personal BIGGEST pet-peev is finding them all over in little places in my boat. My dad smokes all the time and it really ticks me off. Especially when he sits in front of me when we are driving and all the smoke goes in my face. And my parents wonder why I have astmah

I agree that they definitely should not go in the water. This goes for ice fishing too! Its not like they just disappear before the ice melts and there is no harm done!
