Spider Wire for muskies

I have a question for you muskie experts. I normally use 50# spider wire while crank baiting for Northerns and have never been bit off even though no wire leader is used. What is your experience with Muskies and spider wire? Is a wire leader required? Are Muskies more likely than Northerns to bite through spider wire? I am heading for LOW Friday and hope to catch my first Muskie. Thanks for your help.

I’ve caught some pretty darn big muskies up their in the fall running 6 Lb diameter Spiderwire and don’t have a problem with bite-offs. I have been bit off, although it is extremely rare. But given that muskies really aren’t leader-shy, why not try a product like tygerwire for making leaders? It’s very supple and super strong. No bite offs, ever, that I know of.

I would agree with H2O that muskys are not leader shy. Its alot better than seeing a big fish swim away with that 25$ lure in his mouth. I use Titanium leader and they are 2nd to none. Good luck.

Thanks James and Snagger for the advice. Just got back from LOL. Only one hook up on a 26″ muskie. I had a leader on and did not take a chance on just spider wire. There’s an algae bloom on and the active fish seemed to be in what clear water could be found.
