Well the day started out with plans to work on my garage that I am building. When I was almost home my brother (aka Gutpile) called me and said work was slow for him today and he could get out and go pull cranks on Mille Lacs. Well we had been talking about going out and giving this a try. We loaded up our two ten year old kids, Kaelee, and Grant.
I told him I could go for a few hours if he help me with my garage when we got back. Well we headed up to Mille Lacs a little after 10:00. We got started pulling cranks around 12:30. We we just off one of the mud flats in about 34 feet of water. We were marking fish from 18 to 28 feet down. We consulted the trolling bible and set back a few cranks and then put the boards out. It was not long before we had our first fish on. We let Grant take the first fish. it happened to be the smallest for the day at 23 1/2 but very healthy.
We were able to boat 2 doubles which were a blast. The kids were able to boat 9 fish in a short 3 hour trip. Our best bait was fire tiger DD-11 Taildance. 8 of the 9 came on that one bait. We also had one come on a gold and black deep diving thunder stick. Only one fish really smacked the bait enough to make the board jump back. Over half the fish had the bait come out after we got them in the net.
Grant was the man of the trip boating a personal best 29 incher. At ten Grant knows that a 29 incher is not a fish that comes along often. The whole boat was so stoked for him. We will be heading up for the weekend early Friday. I really look forward to boating more of these big, healthy eyes.
Great Job Grant. Kealee thanks for deciding to go with and I will never forget this trip. Brian this is just another great trip we can put in our memories. Fish On! and Freak you guys missed out but we will get up there.
