I’ve never fished the pond in open water, and was wondering if my 18′ modified V w/90hp would be ok? Just not sure how rough it gets out there.

I run the same size and power and I don’t worry. If the wind kicks up just use your head and don’t be in such a hurry.

Although, be prepared for the unexpected. Just ask Jon J.

Use your head and you will be fine. I see alot smaller boats out there than your rig.

One of my first years up there, on the opener, it was cold and windy, and a guy and a gal went cruising by, in one of them Sevylor blow up boats !!! It had to be about a 10 footer, with a little kicker on the back. I knew right there, that I had PLENTY of boat !!!

Ditto, as always play it safe when in doubt!

Your boat would be fine for 82% of the time up there. the other 15% you probably need to use judgement caution or be on the right side of the lake. The last 3% of the time stay on shore or hit the Famous “Formica Flat” and talk to Bongers.

I grew up fishing on Mille Lacs out of a little wooden boat powered by a 60’s vintage 10 horse Johnson. I have lots of memories of heading to shore on runs that took so long the fish on the stringer were dry to the touch by the time we got to the cabin. We didn’t spend a lot of time out on the flats with that boat so it seemed like a dream when we graduated up to a 16 foot lund with a snappy 25 horse. Then, we were really styling when my uncle showed up with his 16.5 footer with a 70 horse.

To make a long story short… you are fine. Just learn to make weather decisions sooner rather than later. Don’t head for shore when you have a storm on top of you. Instead, listen to the weather, VHS, etc. and head for shore with plenty of time before anything potentially dangerous could hit.

I bet you thought you’d seen it all watching that little boat. Kind of like the really drunk guy LAUNCHING his old 12′ PLYWOOD boat with a 7 hp on Pool 3 a couple weeks ago at midnight when i was coming in landing my boat. He had no life jackets, 3 gallons of gas, and not a single navigation light on the boat. Fortunately for him he capsized his boat and it filled with water at the landing so his “outing” was cancelled. Thank God for the angels watching over us sometimes.

Hey Lip, What are you trying to say here, The only time I go in there is when it is too windy, rainy, cloudy, cold, or if it’s too hot, or if there’s a meat raffle, happy hour, or someone in there to talk to, otherwise I’m out there pounding the water.

Funny you bring that up because I was just looking at my new Lakemaster chip and they have changed the name to Bongers Bar. I heard he catches a few big ones off it every night around bar close.
